Packaging Changes - Effective December 4th

Package 2144—Canceled; no further application.

  • In metal tubes weighing each 1 pound or over in cellular, foam or expanded plastic inner containers in fiberboard boxes meeting the requirements of Item 222. Gross weight of package must be not less than 10 pounds.

OR

  • In plastic tubes weighing each 1 pound or over in fiberboard inner containers in fiberboard boxes meeting the requirements of Item 222. Gross weight of package must be not less than 10 pounds

Package 2388-- Canceled; no further application.

  • In steel drums meeting the requirements of Item 260, Note 3, except drums may be constructed without expanded rolling hoops in sidewalls.

Package 2508-- Canceled; no further application.

  • SHIPPING CONTAINER: A unitized pallet load of fiberboard bag-in-box style containers, held in place with plastic stretch film.
  • Boxes-Corrugated fiberboard testing not less than 275 pounds and not exceeding six gallons in capacity.
  • Inner Forms-Full-height partitions, collars or H-dividers of corrugated fiberboard testing not less than 275 pounds.
  • Bag-Inner plastic film bags must be formed and sealed to prevent leakage and must be of a minimum 5 mils in thickness. Maximum capacity per bag must not exceed five gallons.
  • Film-Load of tiered bag-in-box containers must be secured to pallet by use of plastic stretch film.
  • Pallet-Wooden, of sound construction.

Item 680, Packing or Packaging—General, is amended as follows:

  • (2) Articles in bags complying with the construction requirements for such containers, as authorized in individual item descriptions, will be accepted when unitized on lift truck skids, pallets or platforms meeting the requirements of Item 265, provided the bottom tiers of bags are placed within a fiberboard tray, with or without a separate fiberboard sleeve, on the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck. Depth of the tray or tray and sleeve, must extend at least 20 inches from the lift truck skid, pallet or platform deck (see Note 5). Bags, tray and, where present, sleeve must not overhang the deck, and the entire handling unit must be secured together with plastic film and with strapping in opposing directions, at least two straps in each direction. Fiberboard protectors or a barrier sheet of fiberboard, heavy-duty Kraft paper or similar material must be used to prevent direct contact between straps and bags. See Note 6.
  • Note 5—When bags are stacked to a height of less than 20 inches, depth of the tray or tray and sleeve, as the case may be, must extend the full height of the bags.
  • Note 6—These requirements do not apply on articles in flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs), including bulk bags.

  • In addition to shipping container markings required by the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 49 for the shipment of hazardous materials, the following pictorial symbols or precautionary wording must be conspicuously shown only when conditions are applicable, indicating special handling or storage requirements. Palletized or unitized loads may be marked as a single unit. Markings must be shown on two adjacent sides of the handling unit as a minimum, with the exception of markings shown in Secs. 7(a), 8(a), 11 and 13. Symbols may be printed or adhered as a label. For prominence, such symbols may be within a border or have an opposing background color.
