U.S. Weather Update 1.22.26

Summary:

Snow showers and snow squalls are likely to develop across the Northeast on Thursday. Lake effect snow will persist downwind of the Great Lakes. An arctic blast will bring frigid temperatures, gusty winds and dangerous wind chills to the Northern Plains before expanding to the South and East. A major winter storm will begin impacting the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley Friday.
 
Oregon

Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM Thursday.   

  • Visibility down to a quarter mile or less in freezing fog.

Arizona

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday morning through late Saturday night. 

  • Snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches. Expect up to 18 inches at higher elevations.

New Mexico

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Friday night through late Saturday night. 

  • Snow accumulations between 1 and 5inches. Expect up to 8inches at elevations above 9000 feet.

Texas

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 am Friday through noon Sunday. 

  • Total snow accumulations 6 or more inches.
  • A glaze of ice up to two tenths of an inch is possible.
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph on Friday night through Sunday morning.  

Oklahoma

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 am Friday through noon Sunday. 

  • Total snow accumulations 6 or more inches.
  • A glaze of ice up to two tenths of an inch is possible.
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph on Friday night through Sunday morning.  

Kansas

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday evening through late Saturday night. 

  • Snow accumulations between 5 and 8 inches.

Missouri

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. 

  • Snow accumulations between 4 and 7 inches. 

Arkansas

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday night through late Saturday night. 

  • Snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches.
  • Sleet accumulations between 2 and 5 inches. 
  • Freezing rain accumulations of a quarter to a half of an inch. 

Louisiana

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday morning through late Sunday morning. 

  • Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 1 and 5 inches. 
  • Ice accumulations between one quarter and three quarters of an inch possible. 

Missouri

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning. 

  • Total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches.

Tennessee

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. 

  • Mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to 6 inches. 
  • Ice accumulations of a half an inch possible. 

Mississippi

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon. 

  • Mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to 2 inches. 
  • Ice accumulations of a quarter of an inch possible. 

Alabama

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. 

  • Mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 2 to 3 inches. 
  • Ice accumulations of a quarter of an inch and one inch possible. 

Illinois

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Friday night through Sunday morning. 

  • Total snow accumulations between 7 and 13 inches.
  • A light glaze of ice possible. 

Kentucky

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Friday night through Monday morning. 

  • Total snow accumulations between 9 and 14 inches.
  • Ice accumulations around two tenths of an inch possible. 

 Indiana 

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday morning through Sunday evening. 

  • Total snow accumulations between 4 and 7 inches.

Ohio

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday morning through late Sunday night. 

  • Snow accumulations up to 4 to 8 inches. 

West Virginia

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Saturday morning through late Monday morning. 

  • Ice accumulations between a quarter of an inch and three quarters of an inch are expected.  

Georgia

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from late Friday evening through early Monday morning. 

  • Snow accumulations up to 4 to 8 inches. 

South Carolina

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon. 

  • Significant ice accumulation is expected.  

North Carolina

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon. 

  • Heavy mixed precipitation is expected.  

Virginia

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday afternoon through Monday afternoon. 

  • Heavy mixed precipitation is expected.  

Maryland

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday evening through Monday afternoon. 

  • Heavy snow and significant snow accumulations likely.  
  • Precipitation may mix with sleet and freezing rain on Sunday. 

Delaware

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday evening through Monday afternoon. 

  • Heavy snow and significant snow accumulations likely.  
  • Precipitation may mix with sleet and freezing rain on Sunday. 

Pennsylvania

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday evening through Monday afternoon. 

  • Snow accumulations between two and three inches.  
  • Winds gusting between 30 and 45 mph.

New Jersey

Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Saturday evening through Monday afternoon. 

  • Heavy snow and significant snow accumulations likely.  
  • Precipitation may mix with sleet and freezing rain on Sunday

New York

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 7 PM Friday evening.

  • Heavy Lake effect snow expected. Snow accumulations between 2 to 3 feet today with an additional 16 to 22 inches through Thursday.  
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph creating blowing and drifting snow and at times whiteout conditions.
