Weather Update 8.17.21 - U.S.

Summary: Tropical Depression Fred may have weakened inland, but its threats of flooding rain and isolated tornadoes will continue to spread inland through the Southeast, Appalachians and mid-Atlantic. The drenching downpours from this system could also trigger landslides in the Appalachians across the mountains of North Carolina and Blue Ridge Escarpment . It will track across western Georgia today and across the southern Appalachians to West Virginia by tomorrow. Flood Watches: Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia
  
Rainfall
Rainfall totals expected through Wednesday:
  • Portions of Georgia into the Southern Appalachians
    • 4-8 inches up to 10
  • Central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic
    • 2-4 inches up to 6
Tornadoes
Isolated tornadoes are also possible today
  • Northern Georgia
  • Western Carolinas
  • Southwest Virginia
 
Tropical Storm Grace is causing heavy rainfall across the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and the northern Yucatan Peninsula. Grace is not expected to impact the US at this time
 
Tropical Storm Henri is centered southeast of Bermuda, and is not expected to impact the US at this time.
