Weather Update 8.16.21 - U.S.

Summary: Tropical Storm Fred, currently located about 80 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida, and tracking north at 10 mph, is strengthening as it approaches landfall later today in the Florida Panhandle, where it will bring flooding rain, gusty winds, storm surge and isolated tornadoes. Soaking rainfall and possible flooding from Fred and its remnant will also spread inland across parts of Alabama, Georgia, the western Carolinas and mid-Atlantic region. Rainfall
Heavy rainfall is likely to be the most widespread impact that Fred will bring to the northern Gulf Coast and other areas farther inland over the Southeast. 
  • FL Big bend and Panhandle
    • 4-8 inches, up to 12
    • Today and tomorrow
  • Southeast AL to northwest GA to western Carolinas
    • 4-7 inches, up to 10
    • Today and tomorrow
  • Mid Atlantic
    • 2-4 inches, up to 6
    • Tomorrow into Wednesday
Wind
Tropical storm-force winds (39+ mph) are expected in the tropical storm warning area beginning Monday morning
 
Storm Surge
A storm surge warning is in effect from Indian Pass to Yankeetown.
  • Indian Pass to Steinhatchee River
    • 3-5ft storm surge 
  • Steinhatchee River to Yankeetown
    • 2-4ft storm surge
Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Grace is causing heavy rainfall across the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. Tropical storm conditions are possible over portions of Hispanolia today and tonight. Shipments to or from these regions may be delayed. Tropical Depression Eight is also occurring in the Atlantic near Bermuda, however it is not expected to impact the US at this time.
