Weather Update 5.19.22

Summary
Scattered severe thunderstorms are likely Thursday afternoon into Thursday night across portions of the Upper Midwest and from the Mid-Mississippi Valley into the Carolinas. Early season heat with likely record high temperatures will persist across the Southern tier of the U.S. today and will extend into the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast on Friday and Saturday.

Washington

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 10 AM this morning to 10 PM PDT this evening
    • Northwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Blowing dust will be possible, especially near any bare or recently plowed fields. Travelers should use caution and prepare for possible visibility reductions

California

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect from 2 PM this afternoon to 5 AM PDT Friday
    • For the Wind Advisory, west winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Patchy blowing dust may reduce visibility at times. Additionally, strong sudden crosswinds may make travel difficult along north-south oriented roads, especially Highway 395.

Nevada

Wind Advisory 
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect from 10 AM this morning to 9 PM PDT this evening
    • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Use caution while driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicle. Blowing dust could restrict visibility to four miles or less.

Idaho

Wind Advisory 
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening
    • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
      • Localized gusts up to 65 mph are possible
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Unsecured objects may be blown around. Blowing dust will likely reduced visibilities
Montana
Winter Storm Warning / High Wind Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from noon today to 6 AM MDT Friday above 4000 feet
    • Heavy snow expected above 4000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches
      • Up to 12 inches above pass level
    • Winds gusting as high as 60 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult, especially on US Highways 89 & 2. Hazardous backcountry conditions due to strong winds and wet snow.
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening
    • West winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
Wyoming
High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 3 PM MDT this afternoon
    • West to southwest wind 35 to 45 mph
      • Gusts up to 75 mph expected in the mountains
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph in the Lander Foothills.
    • Impacts: Elevated blowover risk, especially for light and high profile vehicles. Impacts will be most possible on Wyoming Highway 28 from Lander to South Pass

Colorado

Wind Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 11 AM to 10 PM MDT Thursday
    • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
    • Impacts:Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect from noon Friday to 6 AM MDT Saturday
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

Utah

High Wind Warning
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 11 AM to 10 PM MDT this evening
    • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

South Dakota 

Wind Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 7 AM this morning to 2 PM MDT this afternoon
    • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
    • Impacts: Sudden wind gusts can cause drivers to lose control, especially in lightweight or high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying
      debris.
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice
    • Major flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast
