U.S. Weather Update 5.16.25

Summary:
Active spring pattern across the center of our nation with several episodes of severe weather and heavy rainfall expected into next week. The potential for very large hail, long track tornadoes, severe wind gusts, frequent cloud to ground lightning strikes and flash flooding are in the outlook. Furthermore, dangerous early season heat wave continues for the Gulf Coast states into early next week. Impacted Lanes: I-15, I-5, I-40, I-10, I-8, I-94, I-90, I-29, I-80, I-35, I-57, I-76, I-81, I-95


South Dakota
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening

  • Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening

  • Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Sudden wind gusts can cause drivers to lose control, especially in lightweight or high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris.

South Carolina
Flood Warning remains in effect until 2 PM EDT Saturday afternoon

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. Flooding of low-lying and flood-prone locations is occurring. Water is over roadways. 

Pennsylvania 
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM EDT Saturday morning

  • Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: Flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads along tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 11 AM EDT this morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood with more heavy rain. Water over roadways is expected. 

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM EDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Tennessee
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 AM CDT Tuesday morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways.
