Weather Update 5.13.22

Summary:
Severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes are possible tonight over parts of the eastern Dakotas, eastern Nebraska, western Iowa, and Minnesota. Heavy rain will lead to a threat of isolated flash, urban, and small stream flooding across the Northern Plains.

 

Major Events:

Southwest Wildfires

  • What: Wind gusts of up to 60 mph today
  • Where: Colorado, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico
  • Impacts: Truckers may run into road closures, low visibility due to smoke, and a high risk of rollovers
  • Major Lanes of Concern: I-10, I-20, I-25, I-40, I-70

Major Flooding

  • What: Additional rain and rapid snow melt causing continued flooding
  • Where: North Dakota and Minnesota
  • Impacts: State highways and road closures likely
  • Major Lanes of Concern: I-29, I-94, US Highway 2 

 

Idaho

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 11 AM this morning to 9 PM MDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Unsecured objects may be blown around

 

Montana

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning in effect from Noon today to 9 PM MDT this evening 
    • West winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, and cause isolated power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Blowing dust could reduce visibility at times, especially on Interstate 15 between Sweet Grass and Shelby.
 
 North Dakota
High Wind Warning / Flood Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening
    • West winds to 45 mph with gusts to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down tree limbs. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice
    • Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast. This approaches the flood of record.

 

South Dakota

High Wind Warning / Flood Warning
  • High Wind Warning in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles.
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring

 

Minnesota

High Wind Warning / Flood Warning
  • High Wind Warning in effect from 7 AM this morning to 8 PM CDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles.
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring

 

Additional Flood Advisories include but not limited to the following: Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, and Oklahoma
