Weather Update 5.12.22

Summary:
Severe thunderstorms will continue across the Upper Midwest into Thursday with all hazards possible. Fire weather concerns persist across eastern Colorado and the south-central High Plains with elevated to critical conditions. This region continues to be extremely dry with drought conditions and winds remaining gusty during peak heating hours.

 

Major Events:

Southwest Wildfires

  • What: Wind gusts of up to 60 mph today
  • Where: Colorado, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico
  • Impacts: Truckers may run into road closures, low visibility due to smoke, and a high risk of rollovers

Major Flooding

  • What: Additional rain and rapid snow melt causing continued flooding
  • Where: North Dakota and Minnesota
  • Impacts: State highways and road closures likely
  • Major Lanes of Concern: I-29, I-94, US Highway 2 

 

Oregon

Winter Weather Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 10 PM PDT this afternoon above 5000 feet
    • Snow expected above 4500 feet. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult

Washington

Winter Weather Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening above 4500 feet
    • Snow expected above 4500 feet. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult

 

California

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 6 PM this afternoon to 9 AM PDT Friday
    • North winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Idaho

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 9 PM MDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 30 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Wyoming

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning in effect from 8 AM this morning to 6 PM MDT this evening 
    • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Elevated blowover risk, especially for light and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers. A brief period of blowing snow is possible
      across Sweetwater County during the morning hours
 
 

Colorado

High Wind Warning 
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until Noon MDT today
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Areas of blowing dust may reduce visibility at times. Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

 

 
Coastal Flood Warnings include the following: Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina

 

Additional Flood Advisories include but not limited to the following: Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota
