Weather Update 4.7.22

Summary: A strong cold front will reach the East Coast on Thursday and likely trigger severe storms in eastern North Carolina, southeast Virginia and central Florida. Meanwhile, critical fire weather conditions will continue in portions of the south-central Plains due to gusty winds and dry conditions. Finally, heat and record high temperatures are possible in parts of California and southeast Florida. Impacted: I-29, I-35, I-45, I-70, I-80, I-90, I-94

Major lanes of concern

Gusts of 60 to 70 mph will be common from the Dakotas all the way to Texas. Not only will this elevate the risk of more rollovers, but the winds may also kick up localized dust storms, reducing visibility at times

  • Interstate 29 from Omaha, Nebraska, to the U.S.-Canada border
  • Interstate 35 from Dallas to Topeka, Kansas
  • Interstate 45 from Houston to Dallas
  • Interstate 70 from Denver to Kansas City, Missouri
  • Interstate 80 from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Omaha
  • Interstate 90 in South Dakota from Pierre to Sioux Falls
  • Interstate 94 in North Dakota from Bismarck to Fargo

 

Colorado 

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 9 AM this morning to 7 PM MDT this evening 
    • Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Power outages will be possible. Travel will be difficult due to strong cross winds and blowing dust, especially on east west oriented roadways

 

Texas

Wind Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Wind Advisory in effect from noon today to 7 PM CDT this evening
    • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected
    • Impacts: Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around in the wind. Driving on area roadways may become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles
  • Flood Warning in effect from Tuesday evening to Thursday afternoon
    • Minor flooding is forecast

 

Louisiana

Wind Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Wind Advisory in effect from noon today to 7 PM CDT this evening
    • Northwest winds will be sustained at 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph expected this afternoon
    • Impacts: Unsecured outdoor items may be blown around in the wind. Driving on area roadways may become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles along I-49
  • Flood Warning in effect from Tuesday evening to Thursday afternoon
    • Minor flooding is forecast

 

Oklahoma

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 10 AM this morning to 7 PM CDT this evening
    • Northwest winds near 40 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Kansas

High Wind Warning / Blowing Dust Advisory
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 7 AM today to 8 PM CDT this evening
    • Northwest winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. High winds could make driving difficult for motorists with high profile vehicle
  • Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect from 11 AM this morning to 8 PM CDT this evening
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Visibility may be highly variable due to areas of blowing dust

 

Nebraska

High Wind Warning / Blowing Dust Advisory
  • High Wind Warning now in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening
    • Northwest winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and possibly power lines. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM CDT this evening
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Visibility may be highly variable due to areas of blowing dust

 

 

North Dakota

High Wind Warning / Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning

  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • Northwest winds up to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe location. High profile vehicles should use caution while driving
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon
    • Wet, slushy snow. Additional snow accumulations up to one inch
      • Winds gusting as high as 60 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on wet slushy snow resulting in spotty slippery roads
  • Flood Warning for snowmelt remains in effect until further notice

 

 

South Dakota

High Wind Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
  • High Wind Warning now in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening
    • Northwest winds 30 to 45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris
  • Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 10 PM MDT this evening
    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 55 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, primarily while snow is falling

 

Minnesota

Winter Weather Advisory / High Wind Warning / Flood Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon
    • Wet, slushy snow. Additional snow accumulations 1 to 3 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on wet slushy snow resulting in spotty slippery roads
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • North winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles
  • Flood Warning for snowmelt remains in effect until further notice

 

Wisconsin

Winter Storm Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning in effect until 1 PM CDT Friday
    • Heavy mixed precipitation. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches
    • Ice accumulations of a light glaze
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning and evening commute
 

Additional Flood Advisories include but not limited to: Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Illinois

  • Flood Advisories effective until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
