U.S. Weather Update 4.4.24

Summary:
Heavy, wet snow with some significant sleet will continue over north-central New England and northeast New York and then spread north through Maine into Friday. Moderate impacts to travel and power outages are expected. A Pacific system coming onshore Thursday will bring low elevation rain to California and high elevation snow to the Sierras and the Rockies. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-90, I-82, I-84, I-15, I-40, I-11, I-39, I-41, I-43, I-75, I-96, I-70, I-74, I-69, I-65, I-71, I-77, I-79, I-91, I-95, I-87, I-88, I-81, I-89, I-93, I-195, I-495, I-695, I-295


Maine
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening

  • Heavy snow and sleet. Additional snow accumulations between 5 and 11 inches for a storm total of 6 to 17 inches and sleet accumulations around one third of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Moderate snow with periods of heavy snow with potential for a foot plus of accumulation will create hazardous travel conditions across the region. Strong, gusty winds are also expected with the snowstorm, which could cause damage to trees and power lines. Travel is not recommended as heavy snowfall and very low visibility will create extremely dangerous driving conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute, with impacts potentially lingering into the evening commute.

Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 AM EDT this morning

  • Minor to moderate flooding is expected with this morning high tide due to storm surge and large battering waves.
  • Impacts: Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure may be inundated.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EDT this morning

  • Pockets of minor flooding and splash over is likely during this morning high tide due to storm surge and large battering waves.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM EDT Friday morning

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 11 inches, with the lowest amounts in far Northeast Aroostook from Presque Isle north toward Madawaska. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes. Gusty winds and increasingly wet snowfall could bring down tree branches.

Nevada
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM PDT Friday morning

  • South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected in the valleys and gusts to 65 mph in the mountains.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 AM PDT Friday morning

  • South winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PDT Friday morning

  • Heavy snow. Snow accumulations between 3 and 8 inches with locally higher amounts.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PDT Friday morning

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

New Jersey
Flood Warning remains in effect until 11:30 AM EDT this morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Water over roadways. 

Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 10:30 AM EDT this morning

  • Up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low- lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure will be inundated.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 2 PM EDT this afternoon

  • Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads along tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible.
