U.S. Weather Update 4.3.24

Summary:
Heavy rain and severe thunderstorms will impact portions of the East Coast Wednesday. All hazards are possible, with damaging winds and hail being the main threats. Heavy, wet snow will persist across Wisconsin and Upper Michigan into Thursday. Snow will move into northern New York and New England late Wednesday through Thursday. Moderate impacts to travel and power outages are expected. Impacted Lanes: I-75, I-39, I-94, I-41, I-90, I-43, I-35, I-80, I-88, I-57, I-10, I-95, I-16, I-66, I-695, I-76, I-79, I-70, I-77, I-99, I-180, I-86, I-81, I-87, I-91, I-84, I-395, I-295


Michigan
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 8 PM EDT this evening

  • Blizzard conditions expected. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 24 inches, greatest over the higher terrain from the Huron Mountains to Negaunee with the least amounts near the Lake Superior shore. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph, strongest winds expected on Wednesday, especially near Lake Superior.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commutes. The combination of wet snow and gusty winds will bring down tree branches and cause power outages. Tree damage and power outages could become widespread.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 7 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult to impossible, and should be avoided. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute. The combination of wet snow and gusty winds will bring down tree branches and cause power outages. Tree damage and power outages could become widespread.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM EDT today

  • Wet snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions.

New York
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 AM EDT Thursday morning

  • East winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 AM EDT Friday morning

  • Heavy snow and sleet expected for elevations above 1000 feet. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Strong winds and heavy wet snow could down some tree limbs causing some power outages.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 AM EDT Friday morning

  • Snow and mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 2 to 8 inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Hazardous to difficult travel expected. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday evening or Thursday morning commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 1 AM EDT Thursday morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, roadways, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EDT Thursday morning

  • East winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11:30 AM EDT Thursday morning

  • Flooding along the Hudson River caused by storm surge and rainfall during times of high tide Wednesday afternoon and particularly early Thursday morning.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in vulnerable riverfront communities. Expect around 1 to 2 ft. of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in scattered road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EDT this evening

  • Around 1 ft. of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline.
  • Impacts: Widespread minor to moderate flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline Wed night. Expect around 2 ft. of inundation above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. This will result in numerous road closures and cause widespread flooding of low lying property.

Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 AM EDT Thursday morning

  • 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 ft. of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline with the Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning high tides.
  • Impacts: Widespread flooding of vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline, including roads, parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront. Numerous road closures are likely, and vehicles parked in vulnerable areas near the waterfront will likely become flooded. Flooding will also extend inland from the waterfront along tidal rivers and bays.

Additional Wind Advisories include but are not limited to: California, Nevada, Arizona, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia,  South Carolina, Connecticut, Rhode Island,  and Massachusetts

Additional Flood Watches include but are not limited to: Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey
