Weather Update 4.22.22

Summary: Dry air and gusty winds are expected to bring very dangerous wildfire-spread conditions from the western Central Plains into the Southwest. Heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing rain will impact travel across the northern Plains into Sunday. Severe thunderstorms are expected to produce all severe hazards across parts of the Great Plains into Upper Midwest.

California

Wind Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until 9 AM PDT Saturday
    • West winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph
    • Impacts: Gusty winds and reduced visibility from blowing dust will make driving difficult. Roadways may be affected gusty cross winds and blowing dust. This includes Highways 14 and 138, especially near the foothills
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 AM PDT this morning  
    • Difficult travel conditions with additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches
      • Localized amounts up to 10 inches above 5000 feet
    • Winds could gust as high as 50 mph along exposed ridges
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute

 

Nevada

Winter Storm Warning / Wind Advisory
  • Winter Storm Warning in effect until 11 AM PDT this morning
    • Difficult travel conditions with additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
    • Impacts: Slick road conditions will impact the morning commute and especially travel over mountain passes
  • Wind Advisory in effect form 2 PM this afternoon to 11 AM PDT Saturday
    • Northwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Winds could impact that portion of the US-93 and I-80 corridor
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Blowing snow could also reduce visibility, especially along mountain passes and summits

 

Idaho

Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect until midnight MDT tonight above 6000 feet
    • Snow expected above 6000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches
      • Highest elevations can see 8 to 13 inches
    • Wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph are possible
    • Impacts: Localized blowing snow is possible at highest elevations. Travel could be difficult
  • Wind Advisory now in effect from 1 PM this afternoon to 9 PM MDT this evening
    • Northwest winds of around 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result

 

Montana

Winter Storm Warning 
  • Winter Storm Warning in effect from 6 AM MDT this morning into Saturday 
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches over mountain passes
      • Up to 2 feet on higher peaks
      • Snow accumulation up to 2 inches in valleys below 5500 feet
    • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
    • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult

Wyoming

Dense Fog Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
  • Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 10 AM MDT this morning
    • Road cameras confirm that dense fog has formed in these areas. Visibility near 0 miles in dense fog 
    • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 6 AM MDT into Saturday
    • Periods of snow, heavy at times. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches 
      • Isolated amounts up to 18 inches possible
    • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph
    • Impacts: Travel over mountain passes could become difficult especially tonight into Saturday morning

 

Utah

Wind Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
  • Wind Advisory in effect from 9 am this morning to 9 AM MDT Saturday 
    • Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. A few power outages are possible
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 9 AM this morning to 1 AM MDT Saturday
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches
    • Impacts: Winter driving conditions are possible on mountain routes

 

Arizona

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning in effect from 8 AM this morning to 8 PM MST this evening
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts around 60 to 65 mph
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles

 

New Mexico

Blowing Dust Advisory / High Wind Warning
  • Blowing Dust Advisory in effect from noon to day to 8 PM MDT this evening
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility
  • High Wind Warning in effect from noon to day to midnight MDT tonight
    • Southwest winds 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 70 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel will be difficult especially for high profile vehicles

 

Colorado

High Wind Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
  • High Wind Warning in effect from 9 AM this morning to midnight MDT tonight
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph
    • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and a few power outages may result. Blowing dust will reduce visibility to less than a quarter mile in places
  • Winter Weather Advisory  in effect from 3 PM MDT this afternoon into Saturday 
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility

 

Nebraska

Dense Fog Advisory / High Wind Warning
  • Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM MDT this morning
    • Visibility near 0 miles in dense fog
    • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 11 AM MDT this morning into Saturday
    • South winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines
    • Impacts: Widespread blowing dust is likely. Reduced visibilities associated with blowing dust may magnify already difficult travel conditions. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Kansas

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 11 AM MDT this morning to midnight tonight
    • South winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread blowing dust is likely. Reduced visibilities associated with blowing dust may magnify already difficult travel conditions. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Oklahoma

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from noon CDT into Saturday
    • Sustained south winds to around 40 mph with gusts of 60 to 70 mph are expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Texas

Dense Fog Advisory / High Wind Warning
  • Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect from noon today to 8 PM MDT this evening
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility
  • High Wind Warning in effect from noon CDT today into Saturday
    • Sustained south winds to around 40 mph with gusts of 60 to 70 mph are expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Minnesota

Wind Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Wind Advisory Advisory in effect from 9 AM TO 7 PM CDT Saturday
    • South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice
    • Moderate flooding is forecast
