U.S. Weather Update 4.19.23

Summary:
A frontal system will bring potential for severe storms with large to giant hail, damaging winds, and locally heavy rain from the south Plains to the Midwest. Gusty, dry winds will keep fire weather threats elevated to critical in the south and central High Plains. Heavy snow continues for parts of the Northwest mountains to the north Plains. Heavy rain may cause flooding in Hawaii. Impacted Lanes: I-94, I-84, I-5, I-90, I-15, I-70, I-29, I-35, I-39


Montana
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Wet snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, mainly over the higher hills. Winds gusting 35 to 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be impacted by snow, areas of poor visibility and strong west to northwest winds. The interstate and major highways are expected to stay wet, except for the higher passes which may see slushy conditions.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM MDT Thursday evening

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches with isolated higher amounts. North winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT Friday evening

  • Flooding caused by snowmelt continues.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways. 

North Dakota
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 AM CDT Thursday morning

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 AM CDT Thursday morning

  • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM CDT this evening 

  • West winds around 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Flood Warning remains in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by snowmelt will continue.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Numerous roads remain closed due to flooding. 

Wyoming
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 3 PM MDT this afternoon

  • West winds 35 to 50 MPH with gusts up to 70 MPH expected.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight or high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.
