Weather Update 4.12.22

Summary: A large storm system will be responsible for a period of very active weather across many areas of the lower 48 into the middle of the week. Threats associated with this storm include blizzard conditions across the northern Plains, extremely critical fire weather across the High Plains, and a multi-day severe weather and flooding threat from the Plains into the MS River Valley. Impacted: I-25, I-29, I-70, I-90, and I-94

Major lanes of concern

  • Interstate 25 from Buffalo to Casper, Wyoming
  • Interstate 29 in North Dakota from the Canada border to Fargo
  • Interstate 70 in Colorado west of Denver
  • Interstate 90 from Gillette, Wyoming, to Missoula, Montana
  • Interstate 94 from Billings to Fargo

 

Washington 

Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PDT this morning  
    • Snow above 1000 feet. Additional snow accumulations of up to 3 inches
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery roads conditions 
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 PM PDT this afternoon
    • Heavy snow above 3000 feet. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute

 

Oregon

Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 5 AM PDT Wednesday
    • Snow above 1000 feet. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 12 inches
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 AM PDT Wednesday 
    • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches
      • Up to 22 inches at the highest elevations
    • Heaviest snowfall rates will occur tonight. Snow will then taper off Wednesday morning, but continue at lighter rates through Thursday afternoon
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Tree damage is possible from snow loading, especially along more remote roads away from Highway 138

 

California

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 AM this morning 
    • Northwest to north winds 30 to 45 mph
      • Damaging gusts up to 75 mph expected
    • Strongest winds through the Interstate 5 corridor
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down large objects such as trees and power lines. Power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Nevada

Winter Weather Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 5 PM PDT this afternoon 
    • Snow and blowing snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to 4 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches

 

Idaho

Winter Storm Warning / Wind Advisory
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight MDT tonight
    • Snow and blowing snow. Additional accumulations of 4 to 8 inches
    • Winds gusting up to 40 MPH
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult with slick roads. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening
    • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result

 

Montana

Winter Storm Warning / High Wind Warning / Blizzard Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon MDT Wednesday
    • Heavy snow expected. Additional snow accumulations between 6 and 14 inches
      • 10 to 18 inches in the mountains
    • Winds gusting as high as 55 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 AM MDT this morning
    • Northeast winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
    • Gusts up to 70 mph
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines.Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 6 AM this morning to 10 PM MDT Wednesday
    • Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 23 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches

 

Wyoming

Winter Storm Warning / High Wind Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening
    • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult including along Interstates 25 and 90. Road closures are possible. Near whiteout conditions in heavy snow
      combined with blowing snow.
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 3 PM MDT this afternoon
    • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers

 

Utah

Winter Storm Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 3 AM MDT Wednesday
    • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet
      • Locally higher amounts especially in the upper Cottonwoods
    • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph over exposed terrain
    • Impacts: Winter driving conditions are expected on all area routes. Traction restrictions may be enacted. This includes portions of I-80

 

Colorado

Winter Storm Warning / High Wind Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning in effect now until noon MDT Wednesday
    • Heavy snow. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches
      • Locally higher amounts possible above 9,000 feet
    • Winds gusting as high as 70 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult due to near blizzard or whiteout conditions in blowing and drifting snow, especially on ridge tops and mountain passes. Icy and snow- packed roads are likely. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect now until 8 PM MDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 45 to 65 mph with gusts up to 90 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Arizona

High Wind Warning / Blowing Dust Advisory
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 PM MST this afternoon
    • Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph
    • Impacts: High winds can topple trees and down power lines. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM MDT this evening
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Blowing dust will produce low visibilities especially along Interstate 10

 

New Mexico

High Wind Warning / Blowing Dust Advisory
  • High Wind Warning in effect from 8 AM this morning to 6 AM MST Wednesday
    • For the High Wind Warning, west winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles 
  • Blowing Dust Advisory in effect from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM MDT this evening
    • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Blowing dust will produce low visibilities

 

North Dakota

Blizzard Warning / Flood Warning
  • Blizzard Warning Remains in effect until 6 PM CDT Thursday 
    • Heavy snow and blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 12 and 24 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph
    • Impacts: Travel will become very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility
  • Flood Warning in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is forecast

 

South Dakota

High Wind Warning / Winter Storm Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from noon today to midnight MDT tonight
    • Northwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to around 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris
  • Winter Storm Warning now in effect until midnight MDT Wednesday night
    • Snow and areas of blowing snow expected. Total snow
      accumulations
    • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility

 

Nebraska

Wind Advisory
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect from noon today to midnight MDT tonight
    • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result

 

 

Kansas

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 11 AM this morning to 9 PM MDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph expected
    • Impacts: Dangerous travel conditions associated with strong winds and blowing dust is expected, especially on major routes such as Interstate 70, Highway 83, and Highway 283. Blowing dust could result in localized diminished visibility

 

Oklahoma

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 9 AM this morning to 10 PM CDT this evening
    • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Texas

High Wind Warning / Blowing Dust Advisory
  • High Wind Warning now in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening
    • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: High winds could make driving difficult for high profile vehicles
  • Blowing Dust Advisory remains in effect from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM MDT this evening
    • For the Blowing Dust Advisory, visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust expected
    • Impacts: Strong winds and blowing dust will create hazardous driving conditions
