U.S. Weather Update 3.9.23

Summary:
A winter storm is expected to bring moderate to locally heavy snow and gusty winds across the central High Plans. Strong thunderstorms extending from the Southern Plains into the Southeast may produce isolated regions of flash flooding. Heavy rain, flooding, and heavy high-elevation snow will increase for the West as an atmospheric river impacts the region on Thursday. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-90, I-405, I-84, I-80, I-280, I-94, I-70, I-25, I-96


Iowa
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11:59 PM CST this evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery and slushy road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11:59 PM CST this evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 6 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery and slushy road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening commute.

Texas 
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST this morning

  • Flooding is expected to continue as floodwater recedes.
  • Impacts: Flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Some roadways will remain flooded for the next several hours. Creek, stream, and small river flows are elevated.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM CST this morning

  • Visibility as low as 1/4 mile in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Idaho
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 AM MST Saturday morning

  • South winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 70 mph and a mix of rain and snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches with locally higher totals in the mountains.
  • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Unsecured outdoor objects will be blown around. Blowing and drifting snow will also be possible.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 AM MST Saturday morning

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 24 to 36 inches in the mountains above 6500 feet MSL and 12 to 24 inches in the valleys below 6500 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM MST Saturday morning

  • A mix of rain and snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM MST Friday evening

  • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. Locally higher gusts in the mountains.
  • Impacts: Travel may be very difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
