U.S. Weather Update 3.31.23

Summary:
Heavy snow, significant ice accumulations, and blizzard conditions are likely across parts of the Northern Plains into the Upper Great Lakes. South of the winter weather, a regional outbreak of severe storms with some flash flooding is expected across parts of the Mid-Mississippi Valley and Mid-South into the Ohio Valley. Gusty winds may bring critical fire weather to the Central/Southern Plains. Impacted Lanes: I-22, I-65, I-20, I-59, I-15, I-80, I-90, I-94, I-70, I-35, I-39, I-55, I-64, I-75, I-71


South Dakota
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM MDT this evening

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph. 
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 10 PM CDT this evening

  • Blizzard conditions developing by late afternoon. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. 

Montana
Dense Fog Warning remains in effect until 9 AM MDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM MDT this morning

  • Snow occurring. Additional snow accumulations up to 2 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on difficult travel conditions including slick roads and poor visibility at times. The hazardous conditions will impact the Friday morning commute.

New Mexico
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM MDT this evening

  • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds may blow down trees and power lines. Isolated power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM MDT this evening

  • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs may be blown down. Expect strong crosswinds on area roadways. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
