U.S. Weather Update 3.22.23

Summary:
Storm in the Southwest will bring high winds and critical fire weather threats into the south and central High Plains. Locally heavy rain and snowmelt may cause local flooding in southern California and central Arizona. Heavy mountain snow continues from California into the Rockies. Impacted Lanes: I-10, I-210, I-605, I-15, I-215, I-5, I-80, I-84, I-86, I-40, I-17, I-25, I-70, I-35 


New Mexico
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MDT this morning

  • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Visibility may be reduced in blowing dust.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM MDT this evening

  • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Visibility may be reduced in blowing dust.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11:59 PM MDT this evening

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, except up to 15 inches in the higher elevations of the Tusas and northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph on Wednesday which may cause areas of blowing snow.
  • Impacts: Travel is discouraged. Many road closures are likely. Avoid traveling if possible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Tuesday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds and heavy, wet snow could bring down tree branches and power lines. 

California
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 feet and locally up to 5 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM PDT Thursday morning

  • Wet snow. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches, mostly above 5000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Flood Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PDT this morning

  • Small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, roadways and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Streams continue to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall. 

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11:45 AM PDT this morning

  • Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 1 PM PDT this afternoon

  • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Very difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds. Light, unsecured objects will become airborne. Moderate tree and minor structural damage possible.

Kansas
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM CDT this afternoon

  • Visibility one quarter or less at times in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.
