Weather Update 3.22.22

Summary: A strong storm system will bring threats of tornadoes and flooding across the Southern U.S. through Tuesday. Several tornadoes, very large hail, and damaging winds are possible, focused on eastern Texas and adjacent states overnight and then from Louisiana to Mississippi on Tuesday. Heavy to excessive rainfall could bring areas of flash and river flooding in similar area. 

Impacted due to damaging southern storm system: I-10, I-20, I-55, I-59, I-65, I-75, I-85

Major lanes of concern
 
  • Interstate 10 from Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Jacksonville, Florida
  • Interstate 20 from Vicksburg, Mississippi, to Florence, South Carolina
  • Interstate 55 from New Orleans to Memphis, Tennessee
  • Interstate 59 from New Orleans to Birmingham, Alabama
  • Interstate 65 in Alabama from Mobile to Montgomery
  • Interstate 75 from Atlanta to Gainesville, Florida
  • Interstate 85 from Atlanta to Raleigh, North Carolina
 
California

Wind Advisory

  • Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM PDT this evening
    • Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph
      • Strongest in the hills and mountains
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Travel could be difficult for high profile vehicles
 

New Mexico

Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Advisory/Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until Midnight MDT tonight
    • Additional snow expected. New snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches today
      • Storm total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches with isolated higher amounts
    • Impacts:Wintry precipitation will make roads slick and slippery, especially along US-82 and highways over hilly terrain.
    • Where: US-82
  • Wind Advisory/Warning remains in effect until 7 PM MDT this evening
    • North winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
    • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Blowing snow from recently accumulated snowfall will be possible, creating reduced visibility

 

South Dakota

Wind Advisory
  • Blowing Dust Advisory in effect from 10 AM MDT this morning to 7 PM MDT this evening 
    • North winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts around 50 mph expected
    • Impacts: Sudden wind gusts can cause drivers to lose control, especially in lightweight or high profile vehicles. Strong winds can cause blowing dust, reduced visibility, and flying debris
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect now into Tuesday evening
    • North winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Travel could be difficult for high profile vehicles

 

Nebraska

Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon
    • Periods of Snow. Total accumulations from 1 to 4 inches expected
      • Localized higher amounts are possible
    • Winds may gust as high as 45 mph
      • Could lead to areas of very low visibility and near blizzard conditions
    • Impacts: Slick roads and periods of reduced visibility. These hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. Additionally, strong winds and wet heavy snow could bring down tree branches
  • Wind Advisory is in effect from 7 AM this morning to 7 PM CDT this evening
    • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to around 45 mph expected
      • At least a few hours of winds this strong are forecast during the day
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down. Additionally, strong winds in areas of snowfall could result in significantly reduced visibilities

 

Kansas 

Wind Advisory/Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
  • Wind Advisory/Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • North winds 35 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 1 PM CDT this afternoon
    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to three inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 60 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could cause tree damage

 

Oklahoma

High Wind Warning
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • North winds around 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
    • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles

 

Texas

Flood Warning / Wind Advisory/ High Wind Warning / Flash Flood Warning
  • Flood Warning in effect until 10:30 AM CDT this morning
    • Urban area and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected
    • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • North winds 30 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph
    • Impacts: Blowing dust will reduce visibilities locally less than a mile
  • High Wind Warning in effect until 10 AM CDT this morning
    • North winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.Blowing dust may reduce visibilities at times

 

Louisiana

Flood Warning / Wind Advisory
  • Flood Warning in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 PM CDT this evening
    • South winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected

 

Arkansas

Wind Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening
    • Southeast winds 15 to 25 mph
    • Gusts up to 40 mph expected
  • Flood Warning in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast

 

Wisconsin

Winter Weather Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 10 PM this evening into to 1 PM CDT Wednesday
    • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 2 and 5 inches
    • Ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions

 

Minnesota

Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning / Flood Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until Wednesday morning
    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches
    • Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions
  • Winter Storm Warning now in effect until 1 PM CDT Wednesday
    • Heavy mixed precipitation. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 10 inches
      • Except 10 to 17 inches for the higher terrain of the North Shore
    • Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch
    • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be nearly impossible 
  • Flood Warning in effect until further notice
    • Due to snowmelt, minor flooding is forecast

 

Tennessee

Wind Advisory / High Wind Warning / Flood Advisory
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until 7 PM CDT Wednesday
    • Southeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
  • High Wind Warning now in effect form 8 PM this evening to 1 PM CDT
    • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph expected
    • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Flood Advisory remains in effect until further notice
    • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues
    • Impacts: Road closures possible

 

Mississippi

Wind Advisory / Flood Advisory
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until Midnight CDT tonight
    • Southeast winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected
  • Flood Advisory remains in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
    • Impacts: Road closures possible
    • Where: Widespread flooding of lowlands upstream and downstream of the State Highway 35 bridge is occurring

 

Alabama

Wind Advisory / Flood Advisory
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until Midnight CDT tonight
    • Southeast winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected
  • Flood Advisory remains in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
    • Impacts: Road closures possible

 

Florida

Wind Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Wind Advisory now in effect until Midnight tonight
    • Southeast winds 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected
    • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result
    • Where: Florida Panhandle

  • Flood Advisories effective until further notice

    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
