U.S. Weather Update 3.21.23

Summary:
A strong storm will move ashore across California today accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain and heavy snow for the higher terrain. Flooding will be of great concern for Southern California into portions of Arizona through Wednesday. Several feet of snow is expected across central and southern California Mountains into the central Great Basin. Snow will impact the northern Plains into tonight. Impacted Lanes: I-10, I-210, I-605, I-15, I-215, I-5, I-40, I-84, I-86, I-17, I-70, I-25, I-90, I-94, I-35, I-44, I-49, I-30, I-69, I-55


California
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet above 6000 feet and 2-10 inches between 3500 and 6000 feet. Southerly Winds gusting as high as 65 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 PM PDT this evening

  • South winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9 PM PDT this evening

  • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PDT Wednesday morning

  • Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: There will be flooding of roadways, small streams, and creeks. In addition, there will be an increased risk of rock and mudslides, especially in and near the lower mountains and canyon roadways.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Wet snow expected. Snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is expected, mostly above 5000 feet, locally greater on the highest peaks. Winds gusting as high as 75 mph. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

South Carolina
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EDT this morning

  • Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected along shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: This could result in some roads becoming impassable.

Arizona
Flood Watch remains in effect until 9 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Low-water crossings may be flooded.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 3 AM PDT Wednesday morning

  • Southwest winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds. Light, unsecured objects may become airborne. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. In addition, strong winds over desert areas could result in briefly lowered visibilities to well under a mile at times in blowing dust or blowing sand.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM MST Wednesday morning

  • Wet snow expected above 6000 feet. Total snow accumulations up to 5 inches, with higher amounts above 7000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 PM MST Wednesday afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected above 6000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Flood Warning remains in effect until 12 PM MST Sunday afternoon

  • Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues, and additional rain is in the forecast which will exacerbate flooding.
  • Impacts: Flooding on Tonto Creek through Tonto Basin. Unbridged crossings are not safe to pass. Impacts may last beyond the expiration time.
