U.S. Weather Update 3.20.23

Summary:
A trough will bring widespread rain and mountain snow across the Western U.S. into Monday with the heaviest snow in the Sierras and central Rockies. A significant storm will push onto the West Coast Tuesday with another round of heavy rain, heavy mountain snow, and high winds. In California, widespread rainfall across wet antecedent conditions will lead to isolated flooding impacts. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-82, I-5, I-86, I-15, I-80, I-84, I-70, I-25, I-40


South Dakota
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM MDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Utah 
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches with locally higher amounts up to 30 inches in the Tushar Mountains and near Brian Head.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Strong winds could bring down tree branches.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11:59 PM MDT Wednesday evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches with locally higher amounts possible. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

California 
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Snowfall of 1 to 2 feet from 5000 to 6000 feet, 2 to 4 feet from 6000 to 7500 feet, and locally 4 feet or more on the higher peaks is expected. Winds gusting as high as 80 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Wet snow expected. Snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is expected, mostly above 5000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PDT Tuesday evening

  • South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Strong winds could damage trees and other objects. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PDT Tuesday evening

  • South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
  • Impacts: Flooding will be possible in creeks, normally dry washes, swimming holes and over recently burned areas. Low-water crossings could also experience flooding, which would create deadly travel conditions.
