U.S. Weather Update 3.16.23

Summary:
A winter storm is expected to bring widespread heavy snowfall and strong winds to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes. Flooding impacts will continue in the Southwest due to periods of heavy rainfall and snowmelt. Scattered severe thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast across parts of the southern Plains Thursday afternoon and evening. Impacted Lanes: I-70, I-25, I-40, I-76, I-80, I-90, I-29, I-35, I-94


Nebraska
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 AM CDT Friday morning

  • Blizzard conditions possible. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on difficult travel. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. 

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening

  • Mixed precipitation and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. North winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility, including near whiteout conditions at times. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute Thursday. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. 

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM CDT Friday morning

  • Northwest winds 30 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Texas
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 2 AM CDT Friday morning

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM CDT this evening

  • South winds 25 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 PM CDT this evening

  • In the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains, west winds 40 to 55 mph with gusts up to 80 mph are expected. In the Davis Mountains, west winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are expected.
  • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Nevada
Flood Warning remains in effect until 5 PM PDT Friday evening

  • Flooding caused by excessive runoff below Echo Canyon Dam. 
  • Impacts: Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PDT this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Area creeks and streams are running high and could flood.
