U.S. Weather Update 3.15.23

Summary:
The atmospheric river will continue to impact California into Wednesday. This potent storm is expected to produce heavy mountain snow and gusty winds from the Sierra to the central/northern Rockies. As the cold front moves into the Southwest, locally heavy rain could lead to isolated flooding over parts of central Arizona. A storm in the Gulf of Alaska will bring a wintry mix to southeast Alaska. Impacted Lanes: I-81, I-87, I-88, I-86, I-90, I-95, I-89, I-91, I-15, I-84, I-80, I-70,  I-40, I-10, I-17, I-8, I-215 


Montana
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11:59 PM MDT this evening

  • Snow and blowing snow. Total valley snow accumulations 1 to 3 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Periods of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could cause a few power outages and some damage to trees branches.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11:59 PM MDT this evening

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches. Winds gusting as high as 30 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Nevada
Flood Warning remains in effect until 5 PM PDT Friday evening

  • Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt is expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of Meadow Valley Wash, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring. Meadow Valley Wash continues to rise due to excess runoff from earlier rainfall and snowmelt. Low-water crossings are inundated with water and may not be passable.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PDT this morning

  • Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PDT this morning

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening

  • Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. River or stream flows are elevated. Roadways may be covered. 

Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11:59 PM MDT this evening

  • Periods of heavy snow. Additional snow accumulation after 5 AM will generally range between 4 and 8 inches. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected with gusts to 45 mph at times especially in open areas or ridge tops. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult over the western mountain passes, especially during the Wednesday morning commute. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. 

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11:59 PM MDT this evening

  • Periods of light to briefly moderate snow. Additional snow accumulations after 5 AM is expected to range between 1 and 2 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph at times.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday`s morning commute.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 12 PM MDT this afternoon

  • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Elevated blow over risk for lightweight and high-profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.  

North Dakota
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM CDT this morning

  • Visibility one quarter to one half mile in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.
