U.S. Weather Update 3.12.24

Summary:
A strong Pacific storm will move ashore with strong winds, heavy mountain snows and lower elevation rain through mid-week. This storm is forecast to strengthen across the central Plains with heavy snow for the central Rockies, severe weather for portions of the Missouri Valley. Meanwhile, well above normal temperatures for most of the east. Dry conditions for the Plains may spread fires quickly. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-5, I-84, I-86, I-15, I-80, I-580, I-70


Washington
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening

  • Heavy snow above 3000 feet. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 15 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on very difficult travel.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM PDT this evening

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches above 3000 ft. Additional snow accumulations between 8 and 12 inches above 4000 ft. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact travel Tuesday morning.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PDT this morning

  • Minor coastal flooding expected. Inundation of 1.5 to 2.5 feet above ground level is possible along shorelines and low- lying coastal areas.
  • Impacts: Minor coastal flooding due to tidal overflow is expected around high tide. This may lead to flooding of parking lots, parks, and roads, with only isolated road closures expected.

Flood Watch remains in effect until 5 PM PDT this evening 

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Water over roadways is possible. 

Nevada
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM PDT Wednesday evening

  • Snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of one to four inches in Northern Elko County and 5 to 10 inches over the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range. Locally higher amounts are possible. Wind gusts to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM PDT Thursday evening

  • North winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. A few power outages are possible. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
