Weather Update 3.11.22

Summary: A strong cold front will begin to push across the Eastern U.S. today and Saturday bringing a wide range of hazards to the region. Heavy snow is expected from the eastern Great Lakes through the Northeast. Thunderstorms capable of damaging wind, isolated hail, and a few tornadoes are possible across parts of the Southeast to the Mid-Atlantic Friday night into Saturday.

Impacted: I-24, I-40, I-64, I-70, I-76, I-80, I-81, I-90, and I-95

Major lanes of concern:

  • Interstate 24 in Tennessee from Clarksville to Chattanooga
  • Interstate 40 in Tennessee from Memphis to Knoxville
  • Interstate 64 from Lexington, Kentucky, to Charlottesville, Virginia
  • Interstate 70 from Zanesville, Ohio, to Baltimore
  • Interstate 76 from Youngstown, Ohio, to Philadelphia
  • Interstate 80 from Youngstown to Teaneck, New Jersey
  • Interstate 81 from Jefferson City, Tennessee, to Watertown, New York
  • Interstate 90 from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Boston
  • Interstate 95 from Washington to the Maine-Canada border

 

Montana

High Wind Warning / Wind Chill Advisory

  • High Wind Warning in effect form 8 PM MST into the weekend
    • West winds 35 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 75 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles
  • Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MST this morning
    • Very cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero
 
Wyoming
High Wind Warning 
  • High Wind Warning remains in effect from 11 AM MST this morning into Saturday
    • West winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 75 mph expected
    • Impacts: Strong crosswinds will be hazardous to high profile vehicles causing high risk for blow overs.Strong winds paired with a fresh snowpack may create periods of near ground blizzard conditions that could reduce visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
  • Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 2 PM CST today
    • Very cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero expected
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM CST this afternoon
    • Areas of blowing snow reducing visibility to one half mile or less 
    • Northwest winds gusting as high as 40 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory 
  • Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until noon today
    • Very cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero expected 
 
Minnesota
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
  • Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until noon CST today
    • Very cold wind chills as low as 30 below zero expected
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM CST this afternoon
    • Areas of blowing snow reducing visibility to one half mile or less 
    • Northwest winds gusting as high as 40 mph
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility
 
New Mexico
Winter Weather Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches
    • Ice accumulations of a light glaze
    • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
    • Impacts: Wintry precipitation will make roads slick and slippery, especially along US-82 and highways over hilly terrain
 
Oklahoma
Winter Weather Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 AM MST this morning to midnight tonight
    • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches
    • Ice accumulations of a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch
    • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions
 
Texas
Winter Weather Advisory / Dense Fog Advisory / Wind Advisory
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect now until midnight CST tonight
    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations up to two inches
    • Dusting up to an inch expected across the South Plains and much of the Rolling Plains
    • Impacts: PLan on slippery road conditions, especially on bridges and over passes
  • Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST this morning
    • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog causing hazardous driving conditions
    • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility
  • Wind Advisory remains in effect now running into the weekend
    • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected
    • Impacts: Driving on area roadways may become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles
 
Missouri
Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening
    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
    • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, are already slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions
  • Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring
 
Arkansas
Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning 
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 AM CST this morning running into the weekend
    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
    • Impacts: Hazardous travel conditions may develop...especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses...and areas that see the heaviest snowfall

    • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to 1 inch, with total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches
    • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, are already slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions along I-55 and I-72
  • Flood Warning remains in effect now running into the weekend
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
 
Indiana 
Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect into Saturday
    • Snow, briefly heavy at times with hourly rates up to one inch per hour early this morning
      • Additional snowfall accumulations of up to two to three inches expected
    • Impacts: Plan on snow covered roads and hazardous travel conditions
  • Flood Warning remains in effect evening until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
 
Michigan 
Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning
  • Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect now into Saturday morning
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches
      • Snowfall rates of up to half inch an hour
      • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
    • Impacts: Snow will continue into mid morning being locally heavy at times in the I-69 near Lansing and the I-94. Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing
      snow could significantly reduce visibility
  • Flood Warning remains in effect from Friday evening until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast

Kentucky

  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 PM EST this evening into Saturday
    • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Heavy bursts of snow will also limit visibility at times
  • Flood Warning remains in effect from Friday evening until further notice
    • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast
 
Tennessee

  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 PM EST this evening into Saturday
    • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Heavy bursts of snow will also limit visibility at times

 

Pennsylvania 

Winter Storm Warning 
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 7 PM EST this evening into Saturday
    • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
    • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult due to snow covered roadways and low visibility. Gusty winds will contribute to blowing and drifting of snowfall

New York 
Winter Storm Warning
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 4 PM EST this afternoon into the weekend
    • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 9 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph
    • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Expect slippery road conditions and poor visibility 
Vermont
Winter Storm Warning 
  • Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 10 PM EST this evening into the weekend
    • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 9 to 13 inches
    • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph
