Weather Update 3.10.22

Summary: An arctic cold front will move south through the Central U.S. through Friday, before becoming a major storm in the East on Saturday. Heavy snow is expected across the central Plains into Mid Mississippi Valley today. A wide-range of hazards is expected Friday and Saturday across the Eastern U.S. including severe storms in the southeast and heavy snow from the Tennessee Valley to the Northeast.

Impacted: I-24, I-40, I-70, I-76, I-80, I-81, I-90, I-95, I-10, I-16, I-26, I-75, I 95

Major lanes of concern

  • Interstate 24 in Tennessee from Clarksville to Chattanooga
  • Interstate 40 in Tennessee from Nashville to Knoxville
  • Interstate 70 from Wheeling, West Virginia, to Baltimore
  • Interstate 76 from Wheeling to Philadelphia
  • Interstate 80 from Youngstown, Ohio, to Teaneck, New Jersey
  • Interstate 81 from Jefferson City, Tennessee, to Watertown, New York
  • Interstate 90 from Buffalo, New York, to Boston
  • Interstate 95 from Washington to the Maine-Canada border
  • Interstate 10 from New Orleans to Jacksonville
  • Interstate 16 in Georgia from Macon to Savannah
  • Interstate 26 in South Carolina from Charleston to Columbia
  • Interstate 75 from Atlanta to Tampa, Florida
  • Interstate 95 from Jacksonville to Fayetteville, North Carolina

 

California

Blowing Dust Advisory / Wind Advisory

Blowing Dust and Wing Advisory now in effect until 4 AM PST Friday
  • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust possible
  • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected
    • Gusts over the highest peaks could approach 60 to 70 mph
  • Hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility. Difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds

Nevada
Wind Advisory
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 AM Friday
  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches for low elevations; 3 to 6+ inches for the mountains
  • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
  • Blowing dust may reduce visibilities for brief periods of time
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM this afternoon.
  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches
    • The mountains will likely get 2 to 5 inches of additional snow
  • Wind gusts up to 40 MPH will lead to blowing and drifting snow
  • Plan on slippery road conditions. The combination of snow and gusty winds will result in reduced visibility on roadways

Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MST this Morning.
  • Very cold wind chills. Wind chills as low as 35 below zero
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory
Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST this Morning.
  • Very cold wind chills. Wind chills as low as 30 below zero

 

Minnesota
Wind Chill Advisory
Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until  noon CST today.
  • Very cold wind chills. Wind chills as low as 35 below zero
 
Wyoming
Wind Chill Warning 
Wind Chill Warning remains in effect until 8 AM MST this morning.
  • Dangerously cold wind chills. Wind chills as low as 30 below zero
 
Arizona
Blowing Dust Advisory / Wind Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
Blowing Dust and Wind Advisories remain in effect from 7 AM this morning to 10 PM MST this evening. Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM MST this evening.
  • Visibility between one quarter mile and one mile in blowing dust possible
  • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches with higher amounts of 4 to 8 inches above 7000 ft
  • Hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility. Difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds
 
New Mexico
Wind Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
Wind Advisory remains in effect from 11 AM this morning to 7 PM MST this evening. Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM MST Friday.
  • Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 45 to 50 mph expected
  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches, except 10 to 18 inches above 8,500 feet
  • Strong winds will make driving hazardous. The strong winds will also create areas of blowing dust which will cause quickly changing visibilities. Mountain travel could be very difficult to impossible due to heavy snow 
 
Colorado
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MST. Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 AM MST Friday.
  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 8 to 11 inches
  • Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility

 

Nebraska

Winter Weather Advisory 
Winter Weather Advisory in effect until 3 PM CST this afternoon.
  • Additional snow accumulations up to one inch
  • Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute

 

Kansas

Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
Winter Storm Warning and Advisory remain in effect until noon CST today.
  • Heavy snow expected. Storm total accumulations of generally 5 to 7 inches
  • Winds gusting as high as 35-40 mph
  • Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility

 

Oklahoma

Winter Weather Advisory
Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to noon CST Friday.
  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches are anticipated with locally higher amounts to near 4 inches possible
  • Ice accumulations of a light glaze
  • Gusty north winds will create blowing and drifting of snow
  • Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions

 

Texas

Dense Fog Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 9 AM CST this morning. Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 6 PM this evening to noon CST Friday
  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog
  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches are anticipated with locally higher amounts to near 4 inches possible in the northwest sections of the area
  • Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions.

 

Iowa

Winter Weather Advisory
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 AM CST Friday.
  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches
  • Plan on slippery road conditions

Illinois

Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning
Winter Weather Advisory now in effect until 6 AM CST Friday. Flood Warning remains in effect into the weekend.
  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches
  • Plan on slippery road conditions
  • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast

 

Missouri

Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Warning
Advisory now in effect from 9 AM this morning to 6 PM CST Friday. Flood Warning remains in effect from this evening through the weekend.
  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 5 inches
  • Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions
  • Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast along the Mississippi river
    • At 34.0 feet, Minor flooding occurs affecting mainly bottomland and surrounding low lying areas

Arkansas

Winter Weather Advisory / Flood Advisory
Winter Weather Advisory now in effect from 6 AM this morning to 9 PM CST Friday. Flood Advisory remains in effect  through the weekend.
  • Mainly snowfall...with accumulations of up to 3 inches. Some locally higher amounts could be seen
  • Possible ice accumulations of a light glaze
  • Hazardous travel conditions may develop...especially on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses
  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues
  • Highest Impact: I-44
