U.S. Weather Update 3.1.23

Summary:
Widespread precipitation, high winds, blizzard conditions, and record cold high temperatures will continue to impact California as the winter storm moves into the Southwest. Heavy snow also possible in the Upper Midwest from a clipper system. Heavy snow and areas of blizzard conditions expected across southern and interior Alaska. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain possible in the Mid-South. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-8, I-10, I-15, I-17, I-29, I-35, I-40, I-70, I-80, I-84, I-90, I-94, I-215


California 
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PST this evening

  • Heavy snow. Snow total of 10 to 20 inches with local amounts to 30 inches, highest in the eastern San Gabriel mountains. Southwest to west winds 25 to 40 mph with gusts between 50 mph and 60 mph through this morning shifting to the west to northwest 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible due to reduced visibility due to snow and blowing snow. Mountain roads, including higher portions of Interstate 5 will likely be impacted at times. The weight of recent snow combined with strong winds may down trees and powerlines.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM PST this afternoon

  • Light to moderate snow expected. Total snow accumulations of up to two inches, mainly above 2000 feet elevation. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. Light snow is possible on Highways 46 through the Santa Lucia Mountains and interior San Luis Obispo County, Highway 101 over Cuesta Pass, Highway 166 in the Cuyama Valley, as well as Highway 154 through San Marcos Pass.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM PST this evening

  • West winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PST this evening

  • West winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts to 70 mph.
  • Impacts: Strong winds could damage trees and other objects. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 4 PM PST this evening

  • Blizzard conditions. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 feet. Winds gusting as high as 75 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. 

Tennessee
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM CST Friday afternoon

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Low-water crossings may be flooded.

Florida
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Additional Winter Weather Advisories include but are not limited to: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Maine

Additional High Wind Warnings include but are not limited to: Montana, New Mexico and Texas
