U.S. Weather Update 2.7.23

Summary:
Widespread showers and thunderstorms with the risk for flash flooding from the Southern Plains to the Mississippi Valley develops on Tuesday. Moisture tracking into the Pacific Northwest will bring heavy lower elevation/coastal rain and mountain snow. Meanwhile, unseasonably warm temperatures continue for the eastern two-thirds of the country. Impacted Lanes: I-25, I-40, I-90, I-5, I-75


Washington 
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PST Wednesday morning 

  • Heavy snow expected above 3000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 12 to 24 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on very difficult travel.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST Wednesday morning 

  • Snow expected above 3000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 18 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning 

  • South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

California
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon

  • Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected. Strongest winds in the mountains.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects and make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • Snow expected Central Idaho Panhandle Mountains above 3500 feet. Total snow accumulations 6 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph on exposed mountain ridges. 
  • Impacts: Motorists should prepare for winter driving conditions with the most significant accumulations tonight.

Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM MST this afternoon

  • Visibility one mile or less in areas of freezing fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility and potential frost on bridges. Flurries and light freezing drizzle will also exist creating slick road conditions.

Montana
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 3 PM MST Wednesday afternoon

  • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph occurring.
  • Impacts: High winds may move loose debris, damage property and cause power outages. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 3 PM MST Wednesday afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations up to 3 inches on the plains, with between 5 and 10 inches at and above pass level. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph.
  • Impacts: Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult to impossible and tire chains may be required for some vehicles. Those in the backcountry should ensure they have appropriate knowledge and gear and may want to consider alternate plans. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM MST Wednesday afternoon

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines.
