Weather Update 2.23.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A significant winter storm will bring snow and ice from the southern Plains to the Ohio Valley Wednesday through Thursday night, and the Northeast U.S. Thursday night through Friday. Freezing rain and sleet is expected from north Texas through the Mid-Mississippi Valley and eastern Ohio Valley through the central Appalachians which could bring dangerous travel and power outages.

 Major interstates will be impacted as this storm moves.  Interstates include but are not limited to:     I -35, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-57, I-70, I-75, I-76, I-80, I-81, I-90 and I-95. Impacts will include a variety of issues ranging from reduced speeds to major slowdowns and long-term road closures.

 
Major Lanes of Concern:
Interstate 35 from Dallas to Oklahoma City.
• Interstate 40 from Oklahoma City to Little Rock, Arkansas.
• Interstate 44 from Wichita Falls, Texas, to St. Louis.
• Interstate 64 from St. Louis to Evansville, Indiana.
• Interstate 70 from St. Louis to Hagerstown, Maryland.
• Interstate 80 from Toledo, Ohio, to Teaneck, New Jersey.
• Interstate 95 from Philadelphia to the Maine-Canada border.

Washington
Wind Chill Advisory
Eastern Washington is under a wind chill advisory until 10am PST today.   
  • Wind chill -15
 
California
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Sierra Nevada and adjacent foothills from Freson County southward until 4pm PST today.  More snow is expected.
  • 4-8 inches above 4500 feet
  • 2-4 inches 3500 feet to 4500 feet
  • 1-2 inches 2500 feet to 3500 feet
 
Idaho
Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Idaho is under a wind chill advisory until 10am PST today.  
  • Wind chill -15
 
Nevada
Winter Weather Advisory
Eastern Nevada is under a winter weather advisory until 1pm PST today.  
  • Additional snow accumulations up to 2 inches, with 4-6 inches in higher elevations
 
Arizona
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
A winter storm warning remains in place for areas around Flagstaff and Payson, AZ until 11pm MST tonight. Heavy snow expected.  The rest of northern Arizona remains under a winter weather advisory.  
  • 4-8 inches snow accumulation above 5000 feet
  • 8-14 inches snow accumulation above 6500 feet
  • Winter weather advisory:  3-6 inches
 
Montana
Wind Chill Advisory / Wind Chill Warning
Most of Montana is under a wind chill advisory with central Montana under a wind chill warning.  
  • Wind chill warning:  until 3pm MST today; Wind chill -45
  • Wind chill advisory  from 3pm MST today until 8am MST tomorrow; Wind chill -30
 
Wyoming
Wind Chill Advisory / Wind Chill Warning
Most of Wyoming is under a wind chill advisory with the exception of southeaster Wyoming which is under a wind chill warning.  
  • Wind chill warning: until tomorrow at 11am MST; Wind chills -25 to -40
  • Wind chill advisory:  from 10pm tonight until 11am on Thursday; Wind chills -20 to -30
 
Utah
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Southern Utah is under a winter storm warning and the remainder of the state us under a winter weather advisory.  The winter storm warning is in effect until 5pm MST this afternoon.  Heavy snow is expected.  The winter weather advisory is in effect until 5pm MST this afternoon.  
  • Winter storm warning:  2-6 inches snow accumulation
  • Winter weather advisory:  Up to 2 inches snow accumulation
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
Colorado is scattered with winter storm warnings or winter weather advisories.  Heavy snow is expected.  The warnings and advisories are in place until 5am on Thursday.  The wind chill advisory is in place until 11am MST today.  
  • Winter storm warning:  6-12 inches snow accumulation
  • Winter weather advisory: 2-4 inches snow accumulation
  • Wind chill:  -20
 
New Mexico
Winter Weather Advisory
Northwestern New Mexico is under a winter weather advisory from 11am this morning to 5am MST on Thursday.  Snow and blowing snow is expected.  
  • 2-5 inches snow accumulation
  • Wind could gust as high as 45mph
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Warning
A wind chill warning is in effect until noon CST today.
  • Wind chills -50
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Warning
A wind chill warning is in effect until noon CST today.
  • Wind chills -35
 
Nebraska
Wind Chill Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Nebraska is under a wind chill warning until noon CST today.  The rest of Nebraska is under a wind chill advisory until noon CST today.

Wind Chill Advisory
Kansas is under a wind chill advisory until noon CST today.  
  • Wind chills:  -20 to -30
 
Oklahoma
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
The wind chill advisory is in place until 10am CST today.  The winter weather advisory is in place for central Oklahoma until 6pm CST Thursday.  Oklahoma from central OK eastward is under a winter storm warning unti 6pm on Thursday.  Heavy mixed precipitation will occur.
  • Wind chill advisory:  Wind chills -10
  • Winter weather advisory:  Mixed precipitation expected.  Sleet accumulations of up to eight tenths of an inch; Light glaze of ice
  • Winter storm warning:  Sleet accumulations of up to 1 inches; Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch
 
Texas
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
A wind chill advisory is in place for the Texas Panhandle until 111am CST this morning.  Central Texas is under a winter weather advisory until noon CST on Thursday.  A wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain expected.  The Dallas - Fort Worth area is under a winter storm warning until 6pm on Thursday.  Periods of light freezing rain and freezing drizzle mixed with sleet and thunderstorms are expected.

  • Winter weather advisory:  Ice accumulations from a light glaze to one or two tenths of an inch
  • Winter storm warning:  Ice accumulations of one tenth to one quarter of an inch; Sleet accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch.

Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Eastern Missouri is under a winter weather advisory from noon today to midnight on Thursday night.  Mixed precipitation expected.  The winter storm warning is in effect for southern Missouri from noon today to midnight Thursday night.  Heavy mixed precipitation expected.  
  • Winter weather advisory:  1-3 inches accumulation; Sleet accumulations up to one tenth of an inches; Light glaze of ice
  • Winter storm warning:  Up to 2 inches snow accumulations; sleet accumulations around one half of an inch, and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch.
 
Arkansas
Winter Storm Warning
Northern Arkansas is under a winter storm warning until 6pm CST on Thursday.  Widespread ice accumulations are expected.
  • One quarter to three quarters of an inch with up to 1 inch possible in some spots
  • Light sleet and snow accumulation up to an inch are possible
New York
Winter Storm Watch
Upstate New York is under a winter storm watch from Thursday evening until Friday evening.  Total snow accumulations of 7 inches or more in 12 hours possible.
 
Massachusetts
Winter Storm Watch
Massachusetts has a winter storm watch from late Thursday evening until Friday evening.  Four to 10 inches of snow possible.
 
Rhode Island
Winter Storm Watch
Massachusetts has a winter storm watch from late Thursday evening until Friday evening.  Four to 10 inches of snow possible.
 
New Hampshire
Winter Storm Watch
New Hampshire has a winter storm watch from late Thursday evening until Friday evening.  Heavy snow possible.  The potential exists for greater than 6 inches of snowfall.
 
Vermont
Winter Storm Watch
Vermont is under a winter storm watch from late Thursday night until Friday evening.  Heavy snow possible.  The potential will exist for snow accumulations of 6-12 inches.
 
Maine
Winter Storm Watch
Southern Maine is under a winter storm watch from Thursday evening through Friday evening.   Heavy snow possible.  The potential exists for greater than 6 inches of snowfall.
