U.S. Weather Update 2.22.23

Summary:
A massive winter storm will impact the Four Corners region and central Rockies into the Upper Midwest and New England the next few days, while a slowly developing storm will drop down the West Coast to deliver mountain snow and even low elevation snowfall. All of these locations will see moderate to extreme winter impacts with travel not advised in the Upper Midwest due to blizzard conditions. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-90, I-84, I-15, I-86, I-70, I-40, I-10, I-8, I-94, I-25, I-80, I-29, I-20, I-35, I-45, I-49, I-39, I-380, I-69, I-75, I-71, I-271, I-77, I-376, I-99, I-66, I-95, I-64


South Dakota
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Thursday afternoon

  • Blizzard conditions. Additional snow accumulations of 9 to 12 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 AM MST Thursday morning

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 9 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Arizona 
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM MST this evening

  • West winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 to 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to reduced visibility. Difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds. Light, unsecured objects may become airborne. Minor tree damage possible.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MST this evening

  • Southwest winds 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 60 to 70 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Very difficult driving conditions, especially for larger vehicles traveling along roads with crosswinds. Light, unsecured objects will become airborne. Moderate tree and minor structural damage possible.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM MST this afternoon

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibility. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM MST this evening

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to 10 inches. Winds gusting 50 to 70 mph in the morning, decreasing to 40 to 55 mph in the afternoon.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage. 

Michigan
Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 AM EST Thursday morning

  • Significant icing expected. Total Ice accumulations up to one half an inch. Total snow and sleet accumulations of up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph. 
  • Impacts: Expect power outages and tree damage due to the ice. Travel could be impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 AM EST Thursday morning

  • Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches and ice accumulations of up to four tenths of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM EST this afternoon

  • Freezing rain. Total ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch.
  • Impacts: Roads may become icy and bring difficult travel conditions which may impact the morning commute.

Ohio
Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM EST this morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 AM EST Thursday morning

  • Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph expected. 
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon

  • Freezing rain. Ice accumulations around a light glaze. 
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute.

Florida
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM EST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Additional Ice Storm Warnings include but are not limited to: Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois
