Weather Update 2.22.22 - U.S.

Summary:   A winter storm will continue with heavy snow, localized blizzard conditions, and ice from the upper Midwest into New England on Tuesday. Further south severe thunderstorms may bring large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain with flooding over portions of the mid Mississippi Valley and Deep South. Another winter storm will develop over the Southwest midweek tracking across the U.S. into late week.

 
Yesterday a portion of I-94 near Fargo, ND was shut down due to a pileup caused by the snowstorm hitting the area.  This was an 80 mile stretch.  I-29 was also closed from Fargo to the North Dakota-South Dakota border due to whiteout conditions.  As of this morning the highway re-opened but travel is reported to be slow going.    
 
Major lanes of concern:
• Interstate 29 from Kansas City, Missouri, to the U.S.-Canada border.
• Interstate 94 from Bismarck, North Dakota, to Milwaukee.

Oregon
Winter Weather Advisory
Southwest Oregon is under a winter weather advisory until 10am PST today.  This is for areas above 1500 feet.  Snow showers expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch possible.  
  • Cold temperatures below 32 degrees could cause black ice to form
 
California
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Northern California, the Sierra Nevada mountains, and other mountainous areas of California are under a winter weather advisory until 10pm PST tonight.  Snow is occurring.  Parts of the Sierra Nevada are under a winter storm warning until later this evening.  This will lead to significant travel impacts across the passes.
  • Winter storm warning:  8-12 inches additional snow accumulation
  • Roads impacted:  I-80 over Donner Pass, Highway 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  Additional snow accumulations of 2-4 inches
 
Nevada 
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern and Eastern Nevada is under a winter weather advisory until 10am PST this morning.
  • Additional snow accumulations 1-4 inches
 
Washington
Wind Chill Advisory
Eastern Washington is under a wind chill advisory until 10am PST on Wednesday. 
  • Wind chill -20
 
Idaho
Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Idaho is under a wind chill advisory until 11am MST Tuesday.
  • Wind chill -20 to -25
 
 
Utah
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Central and northern Utah is under a winter weather advisory from 11am this morning to 5pm MST on Wednesday.  Southern Utah is under a winter storm warning from 2pm this afternoon to 5pm MST on Wednesday.  
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  12 - 24 inches of snow accumulation; Winds gusting as high as 40mph
  • Winter Storm Warning:  3-10 inches of snow accumulation; Winds gusting as high as 40mph
 
Arizona
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Arizona is under a winter storm warning and a winter weather advisory.  The winter storm warning extends from Flagstaff south to Payson, AZ.  Areas in northern AZ to include the Grand Canyon, Prescott, Prescott Valley and Sedona are under a winter weather advisory from 5pm tonight until 6pm on Wednesday for areas above 5000 feet.
  • Winter Storm Warning:  4-8 inches snow accumulation above 5000 feet and 8-16 inches possible above 6500 feet.  Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.  
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  4-8 inches snow accumulation above 5000 feet
 
Montana
Wind Chill Warning / Advisory
A wind chill warning or advisory is in place for all of Montana until 11am MST today.
  • Wind chill -25 to -40
 
Wyoming
Wind Chill Warning / Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
A wind chill advisory is in place for Central Wyoming.  The wind chill warning is in place for eastern Wyoming.  The wind chills are in place from 5pm this afternoon to 11am MST on Thursday.  Southeastern Wyoming is under a winter storm warning until 11am MST today.
  • Wind chills -35
  • Additional snow accumulation of less than one inch
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning
Western Colorado is under a winter storm warning until 11am MST on Thursday.  Heavy snow and blowing snow expected.  Travel is predicted to become extremely hazardous due to near whiteout conditions in periods of heavy snow and blowing snow.  Significant drifting is expected.  
  • 12" -24" snow accumulations
  • 36"-48" snow accumulations in higher elevations
 
New Mexico
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Northwestern New Mexico is under a winter storm warning or a winter storm watch.  Farmington, NM is the largest city in the winter storm watch.  This is in place from late tonight through late Wednesday night. A winter storm warning is in place for areas around Santa Fe, NM until 5am MST on Thursday.
  • Winter Storm Warning:  2-4 inches with locally higher amounts; Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Winter Storm Warning:  1-3 inches with up to 5 inches through tonight; Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.  Additional and heavier snow expected Wednesday and Wednesday night.
 
North Dakota
Blizzard Warning / Wind Chill Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
A wind chill warning is in place for most of North Dakota.  The southwestern part of North Dakota is under a wind chill advisory until noon CST on Wednesday. A blizzard warning is in place for southeastern North Dakota until 6pm this evening.  
  • Wind Chill Warning:  -50
  • Wind Chill Advisory:  -35
  • Blizzard Warning:  Additional snow accumulation around 1 inch; Winds gusting to 40mph; Dangerously cold wind chills as low as -40
 
South Dakota
Winter Weather Advisory / Blizzard Warning 
A blizzard warning is in effect for northeastern South Dakota until 6pm tonight.  The rest of South Dakota is under a winter weather advisory until 6pm CST this evening.  Travel along I-90 will be impacted.  
  • Blizzard Warning:  Additional snow accumulation around 1 inch; Winds gusting to 40mph; Dangerously cold wind chills as low as -40  
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  1-3 inches snow accumulation; Winds gusting as high as 40mph.  
 
Nebraska
Wind Chill Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Nebraska has a wind chill warning in effect until noon today.  The warning then changes over to a wind chill advisory from 6pm tonight until noon tomorrow.  
  • Wind chill warning:  -40
  • Wind chill advisory:  -30
 
Kansas 
Wind Chill Advisory
Kansas is under a wind chill advisory until 11am and then it resumes tonight from 9pm CT to 10am CST on Wednesday.
  • Wind chill:  -15 to -20
 
Oklahoma
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Watch
Oklahoma is under a wind chill advisory from 1am to 10am CST on Wednesday.  Central Oklahoma is under a winter weather advisory from 6am on Wednesday to 6pm CST on Thursday.  Mixed precipitation is expected, predominantly sleet.  A winter storm watch is in effect for eastern Oklahoma for Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.  
  • Wind chill: -5 to  -10
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  Up to one inch sleet and snow; Light glaze of ice
  • Winter Storm Watch:  Mixed precipitation possible.  Total sleet and snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations around on half of an inch possible.  
 
Texas
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Texas is under a wind chill advisory from 8pm tonight until 10am CST on Wednesday.  Areas around Dallas - Fort Worth are under a winter weather advisory from 6am on Wednesday to 6pm CST on Thursday.  
  • Wind chill:  -15
  • Ice accumulations of one to two tenths of an inch possible
  • Sleet accumulations of 1/4 of an inch
 
Minnesota
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory 
The entire state of Minnesota is under a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory through today.  Heavy snow is expected to continue today.  
  • 3-6 inches snow accumulation
  • Northeast winds 15-25 mph
 
Iowa
Winter Weather Advisory
Iowa is under a winter weather advisory through noon today.  Mixed precipitation is expected.  
  • Less than 1 inch of snow accumulation
  • Light glaze to around a tenth of an inch of ice
 
Missouri
Winter Weather Advisory
Northwestern Missouri is under a winter weather advisory until noon today.  Freezing drizzle occurring.
  • Light glaze of ice
 
Arkansas
Winter Storm Watch
Northwest, north central and northeast Arkansas are under a winter storm watch from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon.  
  • Ice accumulations between one tenth to one quarter inch with locally higher amounts up to one half inch possible.
  • Light sleet and snow accumulations up to an inch also possible.
 
Wisconsin
Winter Weather Advisory
Wisconsin is under a winter weather advisory until 6pm CST today.  Snow for most of today with a wintry mix for some of this morning.  
  • 1-3 inches snow accumulation
  • Light glaze of ice
 
New York
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern New York to include the Saint Lawrence Valley is under a winter weather advisory from 1pm today to 1am EST on Wednesday.  Freezing rain is expected.
  • Total ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch, with localized amounts near two tenths of an inch expected.  
 
Vermont
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in place from 1pm today until 1pm Wednesday.  Freezing rain expected. 
  • Total ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch, with localized amounts near two tenths of an inch expected.  
 
New Hampshire
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in place for early this afternoon into this evening.  Patchy freezing drizzle will give way to more consistent freezing rain later in the day.  
  • Up to 1 inch of snow accumulation
  • Up to one tenth of an inch ice accumulation
 
Maine
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Maine from 1pm this afternoon to 1am on Wednesday.  Mixed precipitation expected.
  • 1-2 inches snow accumulation
  • Up to one half of an inch of sleet accumulation
  • Up to one tenth of an inch ice accumulation
