U.S. Weather Update 2.21.23

Summary:
A massive winter storm is expected to impact a large portion of the U.S. the next few days. The developing storm will continue to dive through the West on Tuesday, before gradually ejecting into the Central U.S. on Wednesday. Hazards expected include widespread heavy snow, blizzard conditions, a zone of sleet and freezing rain, high winds, severe thunderstorms and record low and high temperatures. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-5, I-84, I-86, I-15, I-80, I-94, I-29, I-10, I-8, I-25


Washington
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 12 inches, except 8 to 18 inches above 2500 feet. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Minor coastal flooding due to tidal overflow is expected around high tide. This may lead to flooding of parking lots, parks, and roads, with only isolated road closures expected.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PST Wednesday afternoon

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 11 inches. 
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • Southwest winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph at times.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

South Dakota
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Thursday afternoon

  • Blizzard conditions expected. Storm total snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Thursday afternoon

  • Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 13 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM CST Thursday afternoon

  • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Tennessee
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST this morning

  • Visibility of 1/4 mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.
