Weather Update 2.21.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A very active weather pattern is expected this week and the first of possibly two winter storms will impact the Central, Southern and Eastern U.S. the next couple of days. Heavy snow and ice will wallop much of the Upper Midwest into the Great Lakes, while severe thunderstorms with all hazards and heavy rain with flooding are likely from the southern Plains to the Tennessee Valley and South.

 
Major lanes of concern:
• Interstate 70 from Denver to the Interstate 15 junction in Utah.
• Interstate 90 from Seattle to Chicago.
• Interstate 90 from Reno, Nevada, to Chicago.
• Interstate 94 from Billings, Montana, to Minneapolis.

Oregon
Winter Weather Advisory
Western Oregon is under a winter weather advisory until 10am PST Tuesday.  Snow is expected in areas above 1500 feet.  
  • 1-3 inches below 2000 foot elevations
  • 3-6 inches above 2000 feet elevations
 
California
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning
California is scattered with winter weather advisories.  Areas include northwestern California, the Sierra Nevada mountains and the San Luis Obispo Mountains.  This will be the coldest storm that the San Luis Obispo Mountain range has seen this year.  There is a potential for widespread snow/ice impacts across lower elevation passes that could make travel difficult.   The winter storm warning is in place for the West Slope Northern Sierra Nevada which includes I-80 over Donner Pass, Highway 50 over Echo Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.
  • Winter Storm Warning - Heavy snow expected.  8-12 inches above 4000 feet, with 12-24 inches above 6000 feet
  • Winter Weather Advisory - 1-3 inches with localized amounts up to 8 inches
 
Washington
Wind Chill Advisory
Eastern Washington is under a wind chill advisory from 9pm tonight until 10am PST on Wednesday.
  • Wind chills -15
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Idaho is under a winter weather advisory until 10am PST today.  The wind chill advisory is in effect from 7pm tonight until 10am PST Tuesday.
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches
  • Wind chills -15 to -25
 
Nevada
Winter Weather Advisory
Western Nevada is under a winter weather advisory to include areas around Reno from 7pm tonight until 10am PST Tuesday.  Snow is expected.
  • 1-4 inches snow accumulation; up to 6 inches for higher terrain areas
 
Utah
Winter Weather Advisory
Most of Utah is under a winter weather advisory until 5am MST on Tuesday.  Snow expected.
  • 2-4 inches snow accumulation
 
Montana
Winter Storm Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
A winter storm warning is in effect until 8am MST today.  The wind chill advisory is in place from 8am this morning until 3pm MST on Wednesday.
  • Wind Chills -35
  • Additional snow accumulations up to 2 inches
 
Wyoming 
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
A winter storm warning is in effect for parts of southern Wyoming until 11am MST on Tuesday.  A wind chill advisory is in effect for the state from 11am on Tuesday to 11am MST on Thursday.  The winter weather advisory is in effect for the remainder of the state from 5pm MST today.
  • Winter Storm Warning:  6-12 inches snow accumulation
  • Wind Chills -30
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  Occasional snow, mainly light.  Significant blowing snow possible.  Winds gusting as high as 40-50 mph.
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning
Western Colorado is under a winter storm warning from 2pm today until 8am MST on Tuesday.  Heavy snow expected.
  • 4-7 inches snow accumulation with locally higher amounts possible; higher elevations should expected 8-16 inches snow accumulation 
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
 
North Dakota
Winter Storm Warning / Wind Chill Warning
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6am CST on Tuesday.  Heavy snow and blowing snow expected.  A wind chill warning is also in effect until noon on Wednesday.
  • 2-5 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
  • Wind chills -45
 
South Dakota
Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
A winter weather advisory remains in effect from 6pm CST tonight until 6pm CST on Tuesday.  Snow is expected.  The wind chill advisory is in effect until noon today.
  • 3-5 inches snow accumulation
  • Wind chills -30
 
Nebraska
Wind Chill Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Northern Nebraska has a wind chill warning in effect from 6pm today until noon CST on Tuesday.  The rest of the state is under a wind chill advisory for the same time frame.
  • Wind chill warning:  -35
  • Wind chill advisory:  -15 to -30
 
Kansas
Wind Chill Advisory
Northwestern and west central Kansas are under a wind chill advisory from 11pm tonight until 11am MST on Tuesday.
  • Wind chills -25
 
Minnesota
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Central Minnesota is under a winter storm warning while the rest of the state is under a winter weather advisory.  Heavy snow is expected today across central Minnesota lasting through Tuesday.  
  • Winter storm warning:  10-14 inches snow accumulation
  • Winter weather advisory:  3-6 inches snow accumulation 
 
Iowa
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Iowa from noon today to 6pm CST on Tuesday.  Mixed precipitation initially followed by snow late tonight into Tuesday.
  • 1-3 inches snow accumulation
  • Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch
 
Wisconsin
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
A winter storm warning is in effect for northwestern Wisconsin until midnight CST Tuesday.  Heavy snow accumulations expected.  The rest of the state is under a winter weather advisory from 5pm tonight until 9pm CST on Tuesday.  
  • Winter storm warning:  10-16 inches, with up to 19 inches along the South Shore of Lake Superior
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  3-6 inches snow accumulation
 
Michigan
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Watch
A winter weather advisory is in place for central Michigan from 7pm tonight until noon on Tuesday.  Ice is expected.  Northern Michigan is under a winter storm watch from tonight through Tuesday night.  
  • Winter weather advisory:  Ice accumulations of one tenth to two tenths of an inch
  • Winter storm watch:  Heavy mixed precipitation possible.  Totals snow accumulations of up to 4 inches possible.  Potential ice accumulations of around one half of an inch.
 
New York
Winter Weather Advisory
Portions of northern New York are under a winter weather advisory until 1am on Tuesday.  Areas of freezing drizzle expected.

Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Vermont is under a winter weather advisory until 1am Tuesday.  Areas of freezing drizzle expected.
