U.S. Weather Update 2.20.23

Summary:
A massive winter storm is expected to impact much of the U.S. this week with a variety of hazards. The system will begin across the Northwest on Presidents' Day and continue to dive through the West on Tuesday. Expect this week: widespread snow and heavy mountain snow, high winds, a transition zone of sleet and freezing rain, severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and record low and high temperatures. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-90, I-405, I-15, I-84, I-94, I-35, I-29


Washington
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 12 inches, except 8 to 16 inches above 2500 feet possible. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 AM PST Tuesday morning

  • Southwest winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PST Tuesday morning

  • West winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

North Dakota
Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM CST Tuesday evening

  • Snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility making travel hazardous.

Wyoming
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 2 PM MST Tuesday afternoon

  • Southwest winds 35 to 50 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph for lower elevations. Southwest winds 45 to 60 mph, with gusts to 80 mph for higher elevations.
  • Impacts: Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Considerable blowing and drifting snow is likely in areas with measurable snowpack.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM MST Wednesday evening

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches locally up to 15 inches.
  • Impacts: Winter driving conditions are expected. Heavy snow may impact the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Blowing and drifting snow will reduce visibility.

Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 5 AM MST Thursday morning

  • Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 20 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph Tuesday afternoon. Then, winds gusting up to 35 to 45 mph at times Tuesday night through Wednesday night. 
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
