Weather Update 2.16.22 - U.S.

Summary: A developing storm across the center of the nation will bring multiple hazards including accumulating ice, snow, heavy rainfall, winds and severe thunderstorms later today through Thursday.  Heavy snow is possible across parts of the central High Plains today.  There is a potential for a swath of disruptive snow and freezing rain to extend from northern Oklahoma to southern Michigan on Thursday.  Severe thunderstorms possible from the Southern Plains to the Mid-South beginning Wednesday night, while heavy rain may lead to isolated flash flooding throughout the Mid-Mississippi/Ohio Valleys and Southern Appalachians.

Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory
Central Idaho has a winter weather advisory in place from 10pm tonight until 11am PST on Wednesday.  Snow is expected.  
  • 2-4 inches snow accumulation
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory
Most of Montana is under a winter weather advisory until 5pm MST today.  Snow is expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to 4 inches in mountains
  • 1-2 inches snow accumulations at lower elevations
 
Wyoming
Winter Weather Advisory
Central Wyoming has a winter weather advisory in place until 6pm MST tonight.  Snow is expected.
  • 3-6 inches in lower elevations
  • 5-8 inches in mountains
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory / High Wind Watch
Western North Dakota is under a wind chill advisory from 11pm tonight until 10am CST on Thursday.  Very cold wind chills are expected.  A high wind watch is also in effect from late Thursday night to Friday afternoon.
  • Wind chills -30
  • Northwest winds to 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph
  • Travel could be difficult for high profile vehicles
 
Minnesota
Wind Chill Advisory
Northwestern Minnesota is under a wind chill advisory from midnight tonight to 9am CST  on Thursday.    Very cold wind chills are expected.

Colorado
Winter Storm Warning
Parts of northeastern Colorado are under a winter storm warning from 2pm this afternoon to 5am MST on Thursday.  Heavy snow possible.  Snow will return to the mountains this morning, and then spread from northwest to southeast across the foothills and I-25 Corridor through the afternoon. The eastern plains will see snow develop late in the afternoon and evening.  Roads will initially remain wet, but closer to sunset they should become slick and snow covered.  The heaviest snow is expected to fall between 5 and 9 PM.
  • 4-8 inches snow accumulations
  • 6-12 inches snow accumulations in foothills
 
Oklahoma
Winter Storm Watch
Northern and northwest Oklahoma are under a winter storm watch from this evening through Thursday afternoon.  Heavy snow possible.  
  • 2-6 inches snow and sleet accumulations
  • Light glaze of ice possible
  • Winds gusting as high as 40mph
 
Kansas
Winter Storm Watch
Portions of central, south central and southeast Kansas are under a winter storm watch this evening through Thursday afternoon.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.  
  • 4-6 inches snow and sleet accumulations
  • Ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch
  • Gusts to 40 or 45 mph at times on Thursday
 
Iowa
Winter Weather Advisory
A winter weather advisory remains in effect from 9pm this evening until 6pm Thursday for southern and southeast Iowa.  Mixed precipitation is expected.
  • Snow accumulations up to one inch
  • Ice accumulations of a light glaze
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
 
Missouri
Winter Storm Watch
Northwest and west central Missouri are under a winter storm watch from late tonight through Thursday afternoon.  A wintry mix late tonight will be followed by snow Thursday morning and afternoon.  
  • 4-8 inches snow accumulations
  • Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch possible
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
 
Illinois
Winter Storm Watch
Portions of central and west central Illinois are under a winter storm watch from midnight tonight until 6pm CST on Thursday.  Mixed precipitation will be followed by heavy snow.
  • 5-7 inches snow accumulations
  • Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch possible
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
 
Indiana
Wind Advisory
A wind advisory remains in effect until 7pm this evening.
  • South winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph
 
Michigan
Wind Advisory / Winter Storm Watch
Southern Michigan has a wind advisory in effect from 11am this morning to 8pm EST tonight.  A winter storm watch is in effect from Thursday morning to late Thursday night.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.
  • Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph
  • 3-6 inches of snow accumulations
  • Ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch possible
 
Kentucky
Wind Advisory
A wind advisory is in effect until 7pm EST tonight.
  • South winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph 
 
Tennessee
Wind Advisory
A wind advisory is in effect for Middle Tennessee and western Tennessee from 6am to 9pm CST on Thursday.
  • South winds 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph
 
Mississippi
Wind Advisory
Central and northern Mississippi are under a wind advisory from 6am to 6pm on Thursday.
  • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph
 
Ohio
Wind Advisory 
Most of Ohio is under a wind advisory until 7pm this evening.
  • South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 50 mph
