Weather Update 2.15.21 - U.S.

Winter storm Uri will lift from the southern Plains to the Northeast through Tuesday with snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Severe weather is also expected with this storm in parts of Georgia and Florida. Meanwhile, arctic air with frigid temperatures and dangerous wind chills will remain over the central third of the U.S. this week.

Winter Storm Uri
  • Heavy snow and significant ice accumulations from the Southern Plains and Ohio Valley to the Northeast
  • Additional winter weather is expected for the Northwest this morning, spreading south and east through Tuesday
  • Frigid Arctic air and dangerously cold wind chills to persist in the Heartland through a good part of the week
  • Heavy snow and freezing rain are forecast to advance northeastward today from the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys to the Northeast
  • 6 to 12 inches of snow is forecast from the Ohio Valley and eastern Great Lakes to northern New England
  • Freezing rain is expected to cause a plethora of problems with over a tenth of an inch of ice in the forecast from far east Texas northeastward to southern New England
  • Significant ice amounts of a quarter to a half inch are expected in portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley and the Mid-South
  • dangerous travel conditions, numerous power outages, and extensive tree damage

Alabama
Ice Storm Warning
  • S​ignificant freezing rain event today especially over far northwest Central Alabama
  • ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM CST THIS EVENING
  • WIND CHILL ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO 9 AM CST TUESDAY
  • Storm total ice accumulations of quarter to a half inch
  • Light sleet and snow accumulations up to a half inch
  • Wind chills as low as 5 below zero
Hard Freeze Warning
  • HARD FREEZE WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 9 PM THIS EVENING TO 11 AM CST TUESDAY
  • Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 8 to 22 degrees expected
Kentucky
Ice Storm Warning
  • ICE STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM EST TUESDAY
  • Widespread ice accumulations of two tenths to one half of an inch with locally higher amounts possible
  • Snow and sleet accumulations of up to an inch are also possible
West Virginia
Ice Storm Warning
  • ICE STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM EST TUESDAY
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of up to three tenths of an inch
California
Winter Weather Advisory
  • WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM PST TUESDAY
  • Where: South Central Oregon Cascades to include Highways 62 near Crater Lake, 230 and 138 near Diamond Lake, 140 at Lake of the Woods, and 58 at Willamette Pass.
  • now expected. Total snow accumulations of 7 to 14 inches
  • Winds gusting as high as 50 mph in exposed areas
Wind Advisory
  • WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 7 PM PST TUESDAY
  • Sustained northwest winds 15 to 20 mph, with gusts near  35 mph expected
  • Travel may be difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles, such as campers and tractor trailers
Nevada
Wind Advisory
  • WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM THIS MORNING TO 7 PM PST THIS EVENING
  • Southwest winds 20 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected
  • Gusts to 70 mph in wind prone areas including portions of US-395
  • Sierra ridge gusts up to 100 mph
  • Travel may be difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles, such as campers and tractor trailers
Oregon
Winter Storm Warning
  • WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM PST THIS MORNING
  • Heavy mixed precipitation
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch
  • Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch
Washington
Winter Storm Warning
  • MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING
  • Total snow accumulations of 5 to 12 inches with locally higher amounts up to 18 inches possible
  • Wind gusts up to 35 mph possible creating drifting and blowing snow
  • THE NORTHWEST AVALANCHE CENTER HAS ISSUED AN AVALANCHE WARNING
Idaho
Winter Storm Warning
  • Heavy snow in the Cascades
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to 12 to 24 inches in the Northern Blue Mountains and along the crest of the Cascades
  • Wind gusts up to 35 mph possible creating drifting and blowing snow
  • THE NORTHWEST AVALANCHE CENTER HAS ISSUED AN AVALANCHE WARNING
  • Travel will be very difficult. Travel along I-84, I-90, US-395 and SR-11 will be impacted
Montana
Wind Chill Advisory
  • WIND CHILL ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 AM MST THIS MORNING
  • Very cold wind chills of 20 to 40 below zero
  • Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes
Winter Weather Advisory
  • ​WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON MST TUESDAY
  • Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches
  • Periodic light to moderate snow is expected
Utah
Winter Storm Warning
  • WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 AM MST WEDNESDAY
  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations 24 to 36 inches possible
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph most areas with higher gusts along exposed ridgelines
  • The heaviest snowfall is expected in the upper Cottonwood Canyon areas
