Weather Update 2.04.22 - U.S.

Summary

The expansive winter storm will shift into the Northeast bringing heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain.  The locations previously impacted by snow and/or ice from this storm will experience below freezing temperatures into the weekend which may prolong hazardous winter weather conditions and continue to disrupt travel.  
 
Storm recap:  
  • Thick ice in parts of mid-Mississippi Valley & Ohio Valley.  
  • As of 8am this morning, power companies are reporting more than 350,000 outages in eight states from Texas to New York. Almost 132,000 of those outages are in Tennessee. 
  • Dallas - Fort Worth airport closed for several hours on Thursday due to icy conditions.
  • More than 5,000 flights were cancelled across the U.S. on Thursday due to weather conditions.  As of this morning 2800 flights were cancelled today.
  • Union Pacific Railroad issued a statement yesterday stating that customers with freight shipments moving through the impacted states should expect delays between 24 - 48 hours.  
  • Road closures in eight states yesterday and throughout today are too many to count.
 
Major lanes of concern: 
• Interstate 80 from Cleveland to the I-95 junction in New Jersey.
• Interstate 76 from Philadelphia to Akron, Ohio.
• Interstate 95 from Philadelphia to Boston.
 

Washington
Winter Weather Advisory
Areas just east of Everett, Seattle and Tacoma are under winter weather advisory from 1pm this afternoon until 10am this evening.  This is mostly for areas above 3500 feet.  
  • 6-12 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 40mph
 
Montana
High Wind Warning
Central Montana is under a high wind warning from noon today until 6am on Saturday.
  • West wind 30 - 40mph with gusts up to 70mph
  • High profile vehicles should expect difficulty traveling
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory
North Dakota continues under a wind chill advisory until noon today.
  • Wind chills -40
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Advisory
Northeastern South Dakota is under a wind chill advisory until noon today.  
  • Wind chills -35
 
Colorado
Wind Chill Advisory
Southeastern Colorado is under a wind chill advisory until 9am CST today.  
  • Wind chills -20
 
New Mexico
Wind Chill Advisory
Parts of northern and central New Mexico have a wind chill advisory until 9am MST today.
  • Wind chills -25
 
Kansas
Wind Chill Advisory
Southwestern Kansas is under a wind chill advisory until 9am CST today.  
  • Wind chills -20
 
Oklahoma
Wind Chill Advisory
Most of Oklahoma (with the exception of eastern Oklahoma) are under wind chill advisory today until noon CST.
  • Wind chills -5 to -15
 
Texas
Wind Chill Advisory / Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Most of Texas is under a wind chill advisory until 9am CST today.  A small area of Texas around San Antonio is still under a winter storm warning and winter weather advisory until 10am CST today. 
  • Wind chills -15
  • Warning area:  Ice and sleet accumulation from yesterday will remain on roadways.  Black ice should be expected.  There are numerous reports of accidents, as well as, roads being closed or heavily impacted by ice conditions.  
 
Minnesota
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Minnesota is under a winter weather advisory until 6pm on Saturday.  Snow is expected.
  • 2-5 inches snow accumulation
 
Arkansas
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Arkansas has a winter weather advisory in place until 10am CST today.  Light to moderate snow will continue.
  • Additional snow accumulation of 1-2 inches possible
 
Indiana
Winter Weather Advisory
Southern Indiana is under a a winter weather advisory until 3pm EST today.  Light snow continuing.
  • Additional snow accumulation of up to 1 inch
 
Kentucky
Winter Weather Advisory
Central and eastern Kentucky are under a winter weather advisory until noon today.  Snow continues on top of the heavy ice they received yesterday.
  • Additional snow accumulation of up to a half inch
 
Tennessee
Winter Weather Advisory
Middle Tennessee is under a winter weather advisory until 11am CST today.  Mixed precipitation still occurring. 
  • Ice accumulations of a few hundredths of an inch
  • A dusting of snow is also possible
 
Georgia
Flood Watch
Portions of central and northeast Georgia are under a flood watch until 1pm this afternoon.  Excessive rainfall is expected.
 
Ohio
Winter Weather Advisory
Most of Ohio continues under a winter weather advisory until noon today.  Snow is expected along with blowing snow.
  • Additional snow accumulation of up to one inch
 
West Virginia
Winter Weather Advisory
West Virginia is under a winter weather advisory until 5pm EST today.  Mixed precipitation.
  • Additional snow accumulation up to one inch
  • Ice accumulation of a light glaze
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Weather Advisory
Pennsylvania continues under a winter weather advisory until 3pm EST today.  Mixed precipitation expected.
  • Additional ice accumulations of less than one tenth of an inch
  • Snow / Sleet accumulations of less than one inch
 
New York
Winter Storm Warning
New York has a winter storm warning in place until 3pm EST today.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches
 
Massachusetts
Winter Weather Advisory
Massachusetts has a winter weather advisory until 7pm EST today.  Mixed precipitation is expected.
  • Sleet accumulations of up to one inch
  • Ice accumulations of one tenth to one quarter of an inch
 
Vermont
Winter Storm Warning
Vermont has a winter storm warning until 1pm this afternoon.
  • Additional snow accumulations of 1-4 inches for storm totals of 10-16 inches
 
New Hampshire
Winter Storm Warning
New Hampshire is under a winter storm warning until 7:00pm EST tonight.  Heavy snow and sleet.
  • Additional snow accumulations of 5-8 inches for storm totals of 7-14 inches
  • Sleet accumulations of around 1/3 of an inch
 
Maine 
Winter Storm Warning
A winter storm warning is in place until 7pm tonight.  Heavy snow expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations of 6-10 inches for storm totals of 10-18 inches
