Weather Update 2.02.22 - U.S.

Summary: A strong front will product several rounds of significant winter weather, including heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain across most of the central U.S. that will bring prolonged hazardous winter weather conditions and difficult travel conditions. Dangerous wind chills are in place across the Northern Plains into the Upper Midwest and eastern interior Alaska.

Major interstates in the storm's likely path include:  I-35, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-69, I-70, I-72, I-80 and I-90.  Impacts will include a variety of issues ranging from reduced speeds to major slowdowns or even multiday road closures.  Delays in air cargo are likely as well.  
 
Major lanes of concern: 
• Interstate 35 from Wichita, Kansas, to Austin, Texas.
• Interstate 40 from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
• Interstate 44 from Oklahoma City to St. Louis.
• Interstate 55 from Memphis to Chicago.
• Interstate 64 from St. Louis to Huntington, West Virginia.
• Interstate 70 from Denver to Columbus, Ohio.
• Interstate 90 from Chicago to Syracuse, New York.
 

Washington
Winter Weather Advisory
Southeastern Washington is under a winter weather advisory from 4pm this afternoon to 4am on Thursday.  Snow expected.
  • 2-3 inches accumulation
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Idaho is under a winter weather advisory from 4pm this afternoon to 4am on Thursday.  Snow expected.
  • 2-3 inches accumulation
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
Southeastern Montana (to include Billings) is under a winter weather advisory until 3pm MST This afternoon.  Snow will be ending this morning.  A wind chill advisory remains effect until 2pm this afternoon.
  • Wind chills -30
 
North Dakota
Wind Chill Warning / Wind Chill Advisory 
A wind chill advisory is in effect now until 6pmCST.  After 6pm tonight this will change to a wind chill warning until noon on Thursday.
  • Wind chills -50
 
South Dakota
Wind Chill Warning / Wind Chill Advisory 
Eastern South Dakota is under a wind chill advisory until midnight tonight.  The wind chill warning then takes effect until noon on Thursday.

Nebraska
Wind Chill Advisory
A wind chill advisory is in effect for Northern and central Nebraska midnight tonight until 10am on Thursday.

Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning
Southeastern Wyoming is under a winter storm warning until 2am on Thursday.  Snow continuing.
  • 4-7 inches total snow accumulations
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning
Central and eastern Colorado is under a winter storm warning until midnight tonight.  Heavy snow expected.
  • 8-12 inches snow accumulations
 
New Mexico
Winter Storm Warning
Most of New Mexico, with the exception of western NM, is under a winter storm warning until noon on Thursday.  Heavy snow is expected.
  • Additional snow accumulations between 2-6 inches except between 8-14 inches in the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains.  
 
Kansas
Winter Storm Warning
Kansas is under a winter storm warning until 6am on Thursday.  Snow and blowing snow.
  • 5-7 inches of snow accumulations with locally higher amounts possible
 
Oklahoma
Winter Storm Warning
A winter storm warning is in effect for Oklahoma until midnight Thursday night.  A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow.
  • 3-6 inches with local amounts up to 8 inches along and north of I-44
  • Snow and sleet accumulations of 2-5 inches south of I-44
  • Ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch with locally higher amounts up to two tenths of an inch possible.  
 
Texas
Winter Weather Advisory / Winter Storm Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Western Texas, Lubbock and South Plains Texas are under a winter weather advisory.  The advisory is in effect until 6pm on Thursday.  A wind chill advisory is also in place from 3am to noon on Thursday.  The rest of Texas is under a winter storm warning from 3pm this afternoon until 6pm on Thursday.  A transition from rain to freezing rain, sleet and snow.   Far southern Texas is not under any warnings or advisories nor along the coast.
  • Wind chills -10
  • Advisory area:  3-5 inches of snow
  • Warning area:  2-5 inches of snow; Ice accumulations of one tenth to two tenths of an inch.
 
Minnesota
Wind Chill Advisory
Air temperatures will bottom out between 5 to 15 degrees below zero this morning.  Tonight through Thursday morning, lows will range from around 10 degrees below zero in far southern Minnesota.

Wind Chill Advisory
A wind chill advisory is in effect until noon today and then returns tonight at midnight through 9am on Thursday.

Missouri
Winter Storm Warning
A winter storm warning is in effect from 9pm tonight to midnight on Thursday.  Heavy mixed precipitation expected.  
  • 8-13 inches snow accumulations
  • Ice accumulations of one tenth of an inch
  • Winds gusting as high as 35mph
 
Arkansas
Winter Storm Warning
Arkansas is under a winter storm warning from midnight tonight to midnight on Thursday.  Ice accumulation expected.
  • One-quarter to one-half inch of ice expected; Locally higher amounts
  • Dusting to an inch of snow/sleet
 
Louisiana
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Louisiana to include Shreveport is under a winter weather advisory from midnight tonight to 6pm CST on Thursday. Mixed precipitation expected.
  • Light snow and sleet accumulations 
  • Up to one quarter of an inch of ice possible
 
Illinois
Winter Storm Warning
Illinois is under a winter storm warning until 6pm CST on Thursday.  Heavy mixed precipitation.
  • 7-16 inches snow accumulations
  • Sleet accumulations of around 1/4 of an inch
  • Ice accumulations of a light glaze
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
 
Kentucky
Winter Storm Warning / Ice Storm Warning
Most of Kentucky is under an ice storm warning from 7am on Thursday to 7am on Friday.  Significant icing is expected.
  • Ice accumulations of one quarter to one half of an inch expected
  • Up to an inch of sleet and snow possible
 
Tennessee
Flood Watch
A flood watch in in place for much of Tennessee.  Excessive rainfall is expected late tonight through Thursday evening.
 
Alabama
Flood Watch
Northern and central Alabama are under a flood watch from Thursday morning through Friday.  Excessive rainfall is expected.
 
Georgia
Flood Watch
Northern Georgia is under a flood watch from Thursday morning through Friday morning.  Excessive rainfall is expected.
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
South central and southwest Michigan are under a winter storm warning until 11pm on Thursday.  Heavy snow expected.  Areas around Grand Rapids, and Holland, MI are under a winter weather advisory until 11pm on Thursday.  
  • Warning area:  8-12 inches snow accumulation
  • Advisory area:  4-8 inches snow accumulation
 
Indiana
Winter Storm Warning
Indiana has a winter storm warning in effect from 7pm this evening to 1am on Friday.  Heavy mixed precipitation expected.  
  • Total sleet and snow accumulations in excess of 3 inches
  • Ice accumulations of up to two tenths of an inch
  • Highest snow amounts will be closer to I-70 with higher ice totals south of I-70
 
Ohio
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Most of Ohio is under a winter storm warning.  There is a winter storm watch in place for southeastern Ohio.  The winter storm warning is in effect from 10pm tonight to 7am on Friday.  Heavy mixed precipitation expected.  
  • Northwest Ohio:  8-12 inches of snow
  • Southwest Ohio:  Snow and sleet accumulations of 1-3 inches and ice accumulations of two tenths to one quarter an inch.  Winds gusting to 35mph. 
  • Northeast Ohio:  8-12 inches of snow and light glaze of ice
  • Southeast Ohio:  1-3 inches of snow; one quarter to one half of an inch ice possible
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Areas in northwest Pennsylvania bordering Ohio and the lake are under a winter storm warning from 10am tonight to 7am on Friday.  Heavy mixed precipitation expected.  A winter storm watch is in effect for the rest of Pennsylvania as it borders with Ohio to include Pittsburgh and northern PA that borders New York for late tonight into Friday morning.
  • Warning area:  7-12 inches snow accumulation; Light glaze of ice
  • Watch area:  3-6 inches snow accumulation; Ice up to two tenths of an inch possible
 
New York
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Much of western and central New York are under a  winter storm warning from 1am on Thursday to 3pm on Friday.  Heavy snow expected.  Eastern New York is under a winter storm watch (this does not extend to NYC and Long Island).
  • Warning area:  9-12 inches with locally higher amounts
  • Watch area:  10-16 inches
 
Vermont
Winter Storm Warning
Vermont is under a winter storm warning from 7am on Thursday to 1pm on Friday.  Heavy snow expected.  
  • 8-12 inches snow accumulations
 
Massachusetts
Winter Storm Watch
Massachusetts has a watch in place from late Thursday night through Friday night.  Rain changing to snow and sleet with a flash freeze possible.  Total snow and sleet accumulations of 2-6 inches.
 
New Hampshire
Winter Storm Watch
A watch is in place for New Hampshire from Thursday evening until late Friday.  Heavy snow and sleet possible.  Total snow accumulations of 6-9 inches and sleet accumulations of 1/3 of an inch possible.  
 
Maine
Winter Storm Watch
Maine has a winter storm watch in effect from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.  Heavy snow and mixed precipitation possible.  Total snow accumulations of 5-10 inches possible.  Ice accumulations of a light glaze.
