Weather Update 2.01.22 - U.S.

Summary

A major storm is set to bring disruptive snow and ice accumulations from the Rockies to the Heartland to the Great Lakes beginning Tuesday night.  Significant disruptions to travel are anticipated in the affected areas.  Bitterly cold temperatures will follow the wintry precipitation.  The National Weather Service said the impacts in areas may be "major" or "extreme"  disruptions to daily life from this storm.  They are urging people to be prepared and not take this lightly.  
 
Major interstates in the storm's likely path include:  I-35, I-40, I-44, I-55, I-69, I-70, I-72, I-80 and I-90.  Impacts will include a variety of issues ranging from reduced speeds to major slowdowns or even multiday road closures.  Delays in air cargo are likely as well.  
 
Major lanes of concern: 
• Interstate 35 from Wichita, Kansas, to Austin, Texas.
• Interstate 40 from Little Rock, Arkansas, to Albuquerque, New Mexico.
• Interstate 44 from Oklahoma City to St. Louis.
• Interstate 55 from Memphis to Chicago.
• Interstate 64 from St. Louis to Huntington, West Virginia.
• Interstate 70 from Denver to Columbus, Ohio.
• Interstate 90 from Chicago to Syracuse, New York.
 

 
Washington
Winter Weather Advisory
Areas just east of Everett, Seattle and Tacoma are under a winter weather advisory until noon PST today for areas above 1000 feet.  
  • 1-3 inches snow accumulation
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory
Central Idaho has a winter weather advisory in place from 8am this morning until 2am PST on Wednesday. Snow is expected.
  • 4-6 inches snow accumulation
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in effect from noon today to 8am on Wednesday.  Snow expected.  A wind chill advisory is in effect.  The wind chill advisory is in effect from 3pm this afternoon to noon MST on Wednesday.
  • Snow accumulations up to 6 inches
  • Wind chills -30
 
North Dakota
Blizzard Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Central and eastern North Dakota are under a blizzard warning until noon today.  The wind chill advisory is in effect until noon on Thursday.
  • Snow accumulations of up to one inch possible. 
  • Winds gusting as high as 70mph 
  • Wind chills -35
 
Minnesota
Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
Portions of central, north central, northwest and west central Minnesota are under a winter weather advisory until 3pm CST today.  Light snow and blowing snow is expected.  The wind chill advisory is in place from 9pm tonight until noon on Wednesday.
  • Snow accumulations of up to one inch possible
  • Winds gusting as high as 45mph
  • Wind chills -35
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Higher elevations in eastern Colorado are under a winter storm warning.  Cold and snow is expected to move into most of eastern Colorado and parts of southern Colorado this afternoon and continuing through Wednesday.  
  • 7-14 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 30mph
 
New Mexico
Winter Storm Warning
Northern and central New Mexico is under a winter storm warning from 5pm today to noon MST on Thursday.  Heavy snow expected.  
  • 4-12 inches except up to 24 inches in the high peaks of the northern mountains
 
Kansas
Winter Storm Warning
A winter storm warning is in effect from 9pm CST tonight to 6am CST on Thursday.  Heavy snow and blowing snow excepted.  
  • 5-8 inches snow accumulation
 
Oklahoma
Winter Storm Watch
A winter storm watch is in effect from this evening through Thursday afternoon.  Accumulating snow and ice expected.  Widespread snow totals of 1-3 inches possible across most of Oklahoma with amounts of 4-6 inches possible across northern and central Oklahoma.  In addition, ice accumulations near one-tenth of an inch or greater are possible.  Higher ice totals appear possible across south central and southeast Oklahoma.  
 
Texas
Winter Storm Watch
Most of northern and central Texas are under a winter storm watch from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon.  Heavy snow possible.  Total snow accumulations of 1-3 inches possible with locally higher amounts.  Light ice accumulations of up to a tenth of an inch are possible.  
 
Missouri
Winter Storm Warning
A winter storm warning is in effect from 9pm this evening to 6pm on Thursday.  Heavy snow possible and a brief window of freezing rain.  Total snow accumulations of 6-14 inches possible and ice accumulations of a glaze.
 
Arkansas
Winter Storm Watch
Northern and central Arkansas are under a winter storm watch from late Wednesday through Thursday evening.  Ice accumulations of two tenths of an inch to one half of an inch.  Locally higher amounts are possible.  Sleet/snow accumulations of a dusting to around an inch possible.  
 
Illinois
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Most of Illinois is under a winter storm warning with the exception of southeastern Illinois which is still under a winter storm watch.  The winter storm warning remains in effect from 9pm this evening to 6pm on Thursday.  Heavy snow and sleet expected.  Total snow accumulations of 5-17 inches with higher totals favoring locations near I-72.  Sleet accumulations of between 1/10 and 2/10 of an inch.  Areas in the winter storm watch in southeastern Illinois should expect heavy mixed precipitation.
  • Warning area:  5-17 inches snow accumulation; Ice accumulation of 1/10 to 2/10
  • Watch area:  1-4 inches snow accumulation; Ice accumulation of 2/10 to 4/10
 
Kentucky
Winter Storm Watch
Most of central and northeast Kentucky is under a winter storm watch from Thursday morning to Friday morning.  Heavy freezing rain changing to sleet and snow.   Total ice accumulations of one quarter of an inch.  Total snow and sleet accumulations of several inches possible.  
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
Southern and central Michigan are under winter storm warning from 2am on Wednesday to 11pm on Thursday.  The winter storm warning areas should expect 6-10 inches of snow accumulations.  A winter weather advisory does extend north to include Holland and Grand Rapids, MI.  These areas should expect 3-6 inches.
  • 6-10 inches of snow accumulation with other areas expecting 3-6 inches
 
Indiana
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Northern Indiana is under a winter storm warning starting 1am on Wednesday and extending until 7pm on Thursday.  Heavy snow is expected.  Blowing snow developing Thursday with dangerous travel expected.  Central and southern Indiana has a winter storm watch from Thursday morning through Friday morning.  Heavy freezing rain changing to sleet and snow.  Total ice accumulations of up to one quarter an inch.  Total snow and sleet accumulations of several inches possible.
  • Warning area:  10-20 inches
 
Ohio
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Storm Watch
Northwest Ohio is under a winter storm warning from 7am on Wednesday until 7am on Friday.  Heavy snow expected.  The rest of Ohio is under a winter storm watch from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.  Heavy mixed precipitation possible.  Total snow accumulations of 7-10 inches for parts of northern and central Ohio and 2-4 inches for southern Ohio.  Varying amounts of ice expected from a light glaze to one half of an inch of ice.
  • Warning area:  12-16 inches snow accumulations 
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Storm Watch
Western Pennsylvania is under a winter storm watch from late Wednesday night through Friday morning.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.  Total snow and sleet accumulations between 3-6 inches and ice accumulations between one tenth and three tenths of an inch possible.  
 
New York 
Winter Storm Watch
Most of eastern and central New York are under a winter storm watch from late Wednesday through Friday afternoon.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.  Total snow accumulations greater than 9 inches and ice accumulations up to one tenth of an inch possible.  
 
Vermont
Winter Storm Watch
Vermont is under a winter storm watch from late Wednesday night through Friday afternoon.  Heavy snow possible with the potential of 6 or more inches of snow.
