U.S. Weather Update 12.28.22

Summary:
A series of Pacific storm systems will affect the western U.S. with heavy rain, mountain snow and strong winds into the weekend. Meanwhile, much warmer temperatures are expected through the week for the eastern half of the country. A developing storm across the center and southern portions of the nation will bring increasing threats of rain and some flooding concerns as the system tracks east. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-80, I-90, I-84, I-15, I-70, I-10, I-40, I-17, I-25, I-490, I-87, I-95, Highway 106, I-190, State Route 5, State Route 33, State Route 198


California
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PST Thursday evening

  • Heavy snow expected above 3000 feet. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PST Thursday evening

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches above 2000 feet with 8 to 12 inches above 3000 feet.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult with delays.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Avalanche Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • The avalanche danger is HIGH at all elevations. Dangerous avalanche conditions are expected to continue into tomorrow morning.
  • Impacts: A large atmospheric river will bring periods of heavy rain on snow below treeline stressing an already weak snowpack. Strong winds and heavy snowfall at higher elevations will also create widespread areas of unstable snow. Very dangerous avalanche conditions. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended. Avalanches may run long distances and can run into lower elevations.

Washington
Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon

  • Significant coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure will be inundated. Some shoreline erosion will occur.

 Flood Warning remains in effect until further notice

  • Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast. This approaches the flood of record.
  • Impacts: At 17.5 feet, the Skokomish River will cause moderate flooding, with deep and quick flood waters inundating some residential areas, many roads, and much of the farm land in the Skokomish Valley. Inundated roads include the Skokomish Valley road, Bourgault Road West, Purdy Cutoff Road, and Highway 106.

Winter Weather Advisory  remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning 

  • Snow above 2500 feet. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 60 mph until early Wednesday morning.
  • Impacts: Plan on very difficult travel. Strong winds could cause tree damage.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM PST this afternoon

  • Minor coastal flooding expected.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 4:30 PM PST this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Overflowing poor drainage areas. River or stream flows are elevated.

Texas
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening

  • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 65 mph, are expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

 Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening

  • Southwest winds 35 to 39 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

New York
Travel Ban remains in effect for the City of Buffalo until further notice

  • Snow form Winter Storm over weekend has caused a travel ban for the City of Buffalo and some roadways such as Erie County Sections of I-190 and State Routes 5, 33 and 198; All Remain Closed.
  • Impacts: Travel ban will create delays in freight transportation.

Additional Wind Advisories include but are not limited to: New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas

Additional Avalanche Warnings include but are not limited to: Idaho, Montana and Colorado
