U.S. Weather Update 12.27.22

Summary:
A strong Pacific storm will approach and affect the western U.S. this week with gusty winds, heavy rain, higher elevation snow and some icing for sheltered valley locations. This will aid in milder temperatures for the eastern two-thirds of the country through this week. Wet conditions may evolve with this milder air for the eastern third of the country, a mix possible for portions of the Plains. Impacted Lanes: I-5, I-280, I-580, I-80, I-90, I-84, I-15, I-290, I-190


Washington
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 1 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • Southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph. Strongest winds expected between 11 AM and 7 PM.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Winter Weather Advisory  remains in effect until 10 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • Snow expected above 2500 feet. Total snow accumulations of 8-12 inches. Winds gusting as high as 65 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Strong winds, when combined with falling snow, may reduce visibility at times.

Flood Advisory  remains in effect until 4:30 PM PST Wednesday afternoon

  • Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Overflowing poor drainage areas. River or stream flows are elevated.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 7 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts 40 to 55 mph expected. Peak winds expected Tuesday evening into early Wednesday morning. Strongest gusts expected near the Blue Mountains including the Pomeroy and Alpowa Summit areas with gusts to 60 MPH possible.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

California
Winter Strom Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PST Wednesday morning

  • Heavy snow. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet at the higher pass levels. Winds gusting as high as 70 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Very strong winds could cause extensive tree damage and result in power outages.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • South winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 2 PM PST this afternoon

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • South winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

New York
Winter Strom Warning remains in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Widespread accumulating snow will create dangerous travel conditions. There is travel ban under effect under Erie County and the city of Buffalo. I-90 and I-190 are closed.
