U.S. Weather Update 12.21.22

Summary:
A cold front moving through the northern Rockies, northern Plains, and upper Midwest Wednesday will bring areas of gusty winds, heavy snow and snow squalls, and a sharp drop in temperatures. Bitter cold will spread through much of the country this week while a strong winter storm forms along the front. Blizzard conditions are likely in the Midwest with heavy rain and high winds for the East. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-15, I-84, I-29, I-94, I-35


Wyoming
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 8 PM MST this evening

  • Heavy snow showers are forecast late this morning through the afternoon. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch, possibly 3 inches in some locations. Winds gusting as high 40 to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the evening commute.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 PM MST this afternoon

  • West winds 35 to 45 MPH with gusts up to 70 MPH expected. A few gusts may approach 80 MPH due to snow squalls.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM MST this afternoon

  • Snow with additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with locally higher amounts in in the southern part of the park. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

California
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Minnesota 
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 AM CST Saturday morning

  • Blizzard conditions expected. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult or impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Thursday afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult or impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM CST Saturday afternoon

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Ohio
Winter Strom Watch remains in effect until Saturday evening

  • Multi-hazard winter storm with a combination of strong winds, very cold temperatures, snow, and blowing snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches possible. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could severely impact the Friday morning commute and any holiday travel. Strong winds could cause tree damage.
