U.S. Weather Update 12.20.22

Summary:
A surge of Arctic air behind a cold front crossing the U.S. through the week will bring widespread, dangerous wind chill temperatures through much of the central U.S. and a potential flash freeze from the mid-South to the East Coast. A major winter storm will form on this front bringing heavy snow and high winds creating blizzard conditions for parts of the Plains into the Great Lakes. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-15, I-84, I-5


Montana
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 AM MST Wednesday morning

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 11 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM MST Wednesday morning

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

Wyoming 
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 PM MST Wednesday evening

  • West to southwest winds 35 to 45 MPH with gusts up to 70 MPH expected.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 AM MST Wednesday afternoon

  • Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 10 to 16 inches in the mountains; 6 to 10 inches in Jackson Hole. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph in the mountains.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult, especially over the mountain passes, including Teton and Togwotee Passes. Snow and blowing snow will severely limit visibility at times.

Winter Weather Advisory  remains in effect until 5 PM MST Wednesday afternoon

  • Snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 12 inches, with locally higher amounts in the southwestern mountains. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
