U.S. Weather Update 12.16.22

Summary:
Significant travel hazards persist across parts of the Upper Midwest due to snow and blowing snow. Heavy snow will move across the Northeast, with lake effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes continuing through the weekend. Mixed precipitation continues in the Central Appalachians. Impacted Lanes: I-94, I-29, I-90, I-43, I-80, I-81, I-88, I-87, I-91, I-93 


Oregon
Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility at a quarter of a mile or less in freezing fog with potential black ice building on roadways.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility and potential frost or black ice on bridges and roadways.

North Dakota
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening

  • Blizzard conditions. Additional snow accumulations up to two inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds will likely lead to whiteout conditions and make travel extremely dangerous.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 PM CST this evening

  • Light snow and areas of blowing snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

New York
Winter Strom Warning remains in effect until 7 AM EST Saturday morning

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 2 inches on the lake plain and 3 to 6 inches in the hills south of Syracuse and along the southern Tug Hill plateau.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Lake Effect Snow Warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST Monday evening

  • Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 4 feet in the most persistent lake snows across the Tug Hill plateau.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commutes.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this evening

  • Wet snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to two inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

New Jersey
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM EST this afternoon

  • Up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads. Some partial or full road closures are possible.
