U.S. Weather Update 12.15.22

Summary:
Heavy snow and blizzard conditions continue to create difficult to impossible travel across the north and central Plains and Upper Midwest. The front will also shift into the East with multiple hazards. Wintry mix moves over parts of the Mid-Atlantic with areas of significant icing possible. Heavy snow will spread over the Northeast. Severe storms will be possible in the Southeast. Impacted Lanes: I-90, I-29, I-35, I-94, I-80, I-76, I-68, I-95, I-80, I-86, I-99


Pennsylvania 
Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 PM EST Friday afternoon

  • Significant icing expected. Ice accumulations of one quarter to one half of an inch. Locally higher amounts up to 0.75 inches on the ridgetops and summits. Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 2 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Power outages and tree damage are likely due to the ice. Travel could be nearly impossible. Closures and disruptions to infrastructure may occur. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commutes.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 AM EST Friday morning

  • Heavy snow and minor ice glaze expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel will be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning and evening commute. The gradient of snow accumulation will increase from west to east across the warning area with maximum snowfall around 1 foot.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST Thursday evening

  • Mixed precipitation. Snow and sleet accumulations of up to 4 inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

South Dakota
Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Friday afternoon

  • Blizzard conditions. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST Friday afternoon

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 5 to 12 inches. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11AM MST Friday morning

  • Snow. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.
