Weather Update 10.28.20 - U.S.

Areas of snow, sleet, and freezing rain brought by Winter Storm Billy will slowly taper off across portions of the southern Plains on Wednesday as warmer air is drawn north ahead of Zeta. Zeta is forecast to bring hurricane conditions, life-threatening storm surge, and heavy rainfall to portions of the northern Gulf Coast by Wednesday evening. Heavy rainfall is expected through Thursday along Zeta's track to the Mid-Atlantic. Active Advisories: New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida

  • 1/10th-1/4 inch ice accumulation

Heavy mixed precipitation today over the panhandle
  • 7 inches of snow
  • 1/10th inch of ice
  • 30mph wind gusts
  • Until 7 AM CDT Thursday
Travel could be very difficult in the region
 
Ice Storm Warning
Freezing rain and sleet expected across central OK
  • 1/10th to 2/10th inch additional ice accumulation
  •  Until 1 PM CDT Wednesday
Impacting transit along I-40, I-44, and I-35. Travel is strongly discouraged.

Winter Storm Warning
Heavy mixed precipitation across the panhandle today
  • 7 inches of snow
  • 1/10th inch of ice
  • 30mph wind gusts
  • Until 7 AM CDT Thursday
Impacting transit along I-40 and I-27
 
Ice Storm Warning
Significant icing across central TX expected today
  • 1/10th to 2/10th inch additional ice accumulation
  • Until 7 AM CDT Wednesday.
May impact transit along I-20
 
Hurricane Zeta
 
Hurricane Zeta is strengthening as it heads for landfall later today on the northern U.S. Gulf Coast. Rainfall will also affect a wide area of the East through late week as Zeta interacts with Winter Storm Billy, and strong wind gusts could persist far inland across portions of the South. Zeta could become as strong as a Category 2 hurricane when it nears the northern Gulf Coast
 
Storm Surge
Life-threatening storm surge flooding from Zeta will inundate parts of the northern Gulf near and east of where the center crosses the coast by late today
  • 6-9 feet possible inundation
    • Pearl River mouth to Dauphin Island, AL
Storm Surge Warnings are in effect for:
  • Intracoastal City, LA to Navarre, FL
  • Includes Lake Borgne, Lake Pontchartrain, Vermilion Bay, Pensacola Bay and Mobile Bay
Hurricane Conditions
Damaging winds and widespread power outages expected this afternoon along the immediate gulf cost before moving further inland tomorrow
 
Hurricane Warnings are in effect for
  • Morgan City, LA to the MS/AL border
  • Includes Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and metropolitan New Orleans
Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for:
  • Southern MS and AL
  • Western FL Panhandle
Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for
  • Central AL
  • North GA
Flooding Rainfall
There will be a broad area of soaking rainfall across the southern and eastern U.S. through Thursday
  • 2-4 inches, up to 6
    • Central U.S. Gulf Coast to Tennessee Valley 
    • Ohio Valley
    • Southern to Central Appalachians
    • Mid-Atlantic States
Tornadoes
A few tornadoes are possible Wednesday and Wednesday night
  • Southeast LA into southern MS
  • Southern AL
