Weather Update 1.31.22 - U.S.

Summary:  A storm system moving in from the Pacific will bring strong winds to the Northern Rockies into the Northern Plains that may cause blowing snow and blizzard conditions. Strong to severe thunderstorms may bring a threat of strong winds, hail, heavy rainfall and localized flooding across portions of the Lower/Middle Texas Coast.

Also please keep in mind that parts of the Northeast / New England area received heavy snow and blizzard conditions over the weekend. With the large amounts of snowfall, roads were closed. Areas DOTs were getting the plows out late last night and early this morning. Closures and delays should be expected areas impacted are Long Island and New York City, eastern Pennsylvania to include Philadelphia, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Washington
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
 Portions of Washington are under a winter storm warning.  This is to the east of Everett, Seattle and Tacoma.  The winter storm warning is in effect until 4pm PST this afternoon for areas above 1000 feet.  There is also a line of winter weather advisories in central WA that extend most of the state.  The winter weather advisory is in place until 4pmMST.   
  • Winter Storm Warning area:  4-10 inches snow accumulation
  • Winter Storm Advisory area:  2-8 inches snow accumulation
 
Oregon
Winter Weather Advisory
In Oregon, areas in the South Washington Cascades are under a winter weather advisory until 4pm PST this afternoon.
  • 3-6 inches snow accumulation
 
Idaho
Winter Weather Advisory
Northern Idaho is under a winter weather advisory until 4pm PST today.  
  • 2-7 inches snow accumulation
  • Wind gusting as high as 40 mph
 
Montana
Winter Weather Advisory / High Wind Warning
A winter weather advisory is in place for western Montana until 11am MST today.  The high wind warning is in place for across Montana until 2pm this afternoon.
  • 3-8 inches snow accumulation 
  • West winds 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 60mph
 
Wyoming
High Wind Warning
Western Wyoming is under a high wind warning until 11pm MST today.  The strongest winds are expected this afternoon.
  • West winds 40 to 60mph with frequent gusts 70-80mph likely.  Isolated extreme wind gusts 90-100 mph.  
 
North Dakota
High Wind Warning / Winter Storm Watch
A high wind warning is in effect from 3pm today through 5am Tuesday.  Eastern North Dakota is under a winter storm watch this evening through Tuesday afternoon.  Blizzard conditions possible.  Total snow accumulations of up to two inches possible.  Winds could gust as high as 60pmh.  
  • Northwest winds to around 35mph with gusts up to 60mph.  
 
Colorado
Winter Storm Watch
Southeastern Colorado is under a winter storm watch from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations 6-18 inches.
 
Kansas 
Winter Storm Watch
A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Thursday morning.  Heavy snow possible.  Totals snow accumulations of 4-6 inches possible.  Blowing snow is possible especially from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.  
 
Oklahoma
Winter Storm Watch
Central Oklahoma is under a winter storm watch from Tuesday evening through Thursday afternoon.  Heavy mixed precipitation is possible.  Total snow accumulations of 1-6 inches are possible across Oklahoma.  In addition, ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch or greater are possible mainly in southeastern Oklahoma.  Winds could gust as high as 35mph.
 
Texas
Flood Watch
Areas of Texas to include Galveston, Austin and San Antonio are under a flood watch throughout today.  Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.  Prolonged moderate to heavy rainfall over the Coastal Plains and potentially portions of the I-35 corridor today may lead to localized flash flooding.  
 
Missouri
Winter Storm Watch
A winter storm watch is in effect from late Tuesday night through Thursday evening.  Total snow amounts are expected over 6 inches.  Freezing rain and sleet accumulation will be more significant along and southeast of I-44.
 
Illinois
Winter Storm Watch
Central and southern Illinois are under a winter storm watch from Tuesday evening through Thursday night.  Heavy snow likely possible mixed with a brief period of sleet and freezing rain during precipitation on set Tuesday night.  Significant snow accumulations in excess of 8 inches expected.  Blowing and drifting snow likely late Wednesday night into Thursday.
 
Indiana
Winter Storm Watch
Most of Indiana is under a winter storm watch late Tuesday night through late Thursday night.  Heavy mixed precipitation possible.  Total snow accumulations in excess of 6 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze possible.  
 
Ohio
Winter Storm Watch
Northwestern Ohio is under a winter storm watch from late Tuesday night through late Thursday night.  Heavy snow expected.  Initial snow accumulations of 6-10 inches with locally higher amounts through Wednesday evening with additionally heavy snow possible Thursday.  Widespread blowing and drifting snow Thursday with winds gusting t0 30mph.  
 
Michigan
Winter Storm Watch
Southern Michigan is under a winter storm watch from late Tuesday night through Thursday evening.  Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 8-12 inches possible.
