U.S. Weather Update 1.3.23

Summary:
A significant winter storm will shift from the central Plains to the Upper Midwest Tuesday and Wednesday before weakening over the Great Lakes on Thursday. The storm will bring areas of heavy snow, ice, severe thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall. Starting Wednesday into next week, additional Pacific storms may impact the West with heavy snow and rain that could lead to additional flooding threats. Impacted Lanes: I-80, I-29, I-90, I-35, I-84, I-40, I-17, I-94, I-65, I-74, I-71, I-76


Wyoming
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 AM MST Thursday morning

  • West winds 35 to 50 MPH with gusts up to 70 MPH expected.
  • Impacts: Mainly to transportation. Strong cross winds will be hazardous to light weight and high profile vehicles, including campers and tractor trailers.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 AM MST Thursday morning

  • Blowing snow likely with ground blizzard conditions possible. Wind gusts up to 70 MPH. Expect frequent visibility reductions to one half mile or less.
  • Impacts: Dangerous travel conditions. Blowing snow may result in significantly reduced visibilities and localized whiteout conditions at times. Moderate drifting may yield icy and possibly snow covered roadways.

Nebraska 
Ice Storm Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST this afternoon

  • Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 12 PM CST this afternoon

  • Light snow and light freezing drizzle. Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on extremely hazardous road conditions. Increasing winds after sunrise will cause tree and power line damage due to accumulated ice and snow. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM CST this afternoon

  • Snow and patchy freezing drizzle. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches, on top of at least a light glaze of ice. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.
  • Impacts: Plan on hazardous travel conditions that will impact the morning commute. Increasing northwest wind gusts may cause tree and power line damage due to accumulated ice and snow.

North Dakota
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 12 PM CST this afternoon

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous.

Arkansas
Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 10:30 AM CST this morning

  • Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
  • Impacts: Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Alabama
Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until Wednesday morning

  • Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.
  • Impacts: Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, roadways and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

Texas
Wind Advisory remains in effect until 11 PM MST this evening

  • West winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Additional Dense Fog Advisories include but are not limited to: Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina

Additional Flash Flood Warnings include but are not limited to: Tennessee and Kentucky

Additional Flood Advisories include but are not limited to: California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia and Kentucky

Additional Wind Advisories include but are not limited to: California and New Mexico
