Weather Update 1.28.22 - U.S.

Summary:   A powerful Nor'easter is expected to develop off the Mid-Atlantic coastline on Friday before impacting eastern parts of the Northeast and New England this weekend.  Numerous hazards are likely from heavy snow, with significant accumulations across eastern Long Island/New England, to gusty winds and coastal issues.  The combination of snow and winds may result in blizzard conditions.  

 
Blizzard conditions are likely to slow down or shut down supply chains temporarily in parts of the East Coast this weekend.  Significant delays are possible due to lengthy road closures and scattered widespread power outages.
 
Lanes of concern:
• Interstate 64 from Chesapeake, Virginia, to Charleston, West Virginia.
• Interstate 85 from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Petersburg, Virginia.
• Interstate 95 from Florence, South Carolina, to the Maine-Canada border.
• U.S. Highway 1 from Columbia, South Carolina, to the Maine-Canada border.
• Trans-Canada Highway in St. John’s, Fredericton and Charlottetown.

Illinois 
Winter Storm Warning
Areas to include Chicago, surrounding Chicago and northwest IL are under a winter storm warning until noon today.  Dangerous travel conditions and lake effect snow expected.  Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour will lead to total snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches over portions of the warning area.   Conditions will be highly variable, potentially going from flurries to near white out conditions over a few mile stretch.  
  • 4-8 inches snow accumulations
 
Kentucky
Winter Weather Advisory
Northeast, south central and southeast Kentucky are under a winter weather advisory from 1pm today until 7am on Saturday.  Light to moderate snow and isolated heavier squalls are expected this afternoon into evening, with light snow  persisting later in the night.
  • Half inch to 2 inches snow accumulations
 
South Carolina 
Winter Weather Advisory
Central South Carolina is under a winter weather advisory from 1am to 10am on  Saturday.  Accumulating snow expected.
  • Snow fall around one inch
 
North Carolina
Winter Storm Warning / Winter Weather Advisory
A winter storm warning is in place for eastern North Carolina for 1pm this afternoon until 7am on Saturday.  This is for areas above 3500 feet.   Central North Carolina is under a winter weather advisory starting tonight at 9pm through 9am on Saturday. 
  • Winter Storm Warning:  Heavy snow expected.  Total snow accumulations of generally 2 to 5 inches, with totals of 6 to 8 inches more likely at higher elevations.  Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.
  • Winter Weather Advisory:  1 - 2 inches of snow accumulations
 
Virginia
Winter Weather Advisory / Wind Chill Advisory
A winter weather advisory is in place for Virginia from 4am on Saturday until 9am on Sunday.  The wind chill advisory is in effect for the same time frame.
  • 2-4 inches snow accumulations
  • Wind chills -20
 
West Virginia
Winter Weather Advisory 
A winter weather advisory is in place until 1am on Saturday.  Snow is expected.  
  • Up to 2 inches of snow accumulations
 
Maryland
Winter Storm Warning
This is in place from 7pm tonight until 3pm on Saturday.  Heavy snow expected.  
  • 4-9 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
 
Delaware
Winter Storm Warning
This is in place from 7pm tonight until 3pm on Saturday.  Heavy snow expected. 
  • 4-9 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 40 mph
 
New Jersey
Winter Storm Warning / Blizzard Warning 
This is in place tonight from 7pm until 7pm on Saturday.  Heavy snow expected.  Blizzard warnings are also in place for central and southern New Jersey.  
  • Winter storm warning area:  4-9 inches snow accumulation.  Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
  • Blizzard warning areas:  8-15 inches snow accumulation. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph.  
 
Pennsylvania
Winter Storm Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Eastern PA to include Philadelphia is under a winter storm warning from 7pm tonight until 7pm on Saturday.  Heavy snow expected.  Snowfall rates near one inch per hour are possible.  A wind chill advisory is in place for northern PA starting at midnight tonight and ending at 11am on Saturday. 
  • 4-11 inches snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
  • Wind chills -20 
 
New York
Winter Storm Warning / Wind Chill Advisory
Southeast New York to include New York City and Long Island are under a winter storm warning from 7pm tonight until 7pm on Saturday.  Heavy snow is expected.  Near blizzard conditions are expected on Saturday.  A wind chill advisory is also in place for most of New York .
  • 6-9 inches of snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.  
  • Wind chills -15 to -25
 
Florida
Wind Chill Advisory
Florida is under a wind chill advisory from 2am Saturday until 10am on Saturday.
  • Wind chills as low as 25 degrees expected
 
Georgia
Wind Chill Advisory
A wind chill advisory is in effect for south central and southwest Georgia from 2am on Saturday until 11am on Saturday.
  • Wind chills 10 -20 degrees
 
Alabama
Wind Chill Advisory
Southeast Alabama is under a wind chill advisory from 1am on Saturday until 10am on Saturday.
  • Wind chills 10-20 degrees
 
Connecticut
Winter Storm Warning
Southern Connecticut is under a winter storm warning from 7pm tonight until 7pm on Saturday.  Heavy snow is expected.  Near blizzard conditions are expected on Saturday.  
  • 6-9 inches of snow accumulation
  • Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.  
 
Massachusetts
Blizzard Warning
Massachusetts has a blizzard warning in place from midnight tonight until midnight Saturday.  Considerable blowing and drifting snow along with near white out conditions at times.  Snowfall rates of 2-4 inches per hour is possible.
  • 17-22 inches snow accumulations
  • Winds gusting as high as 60 mph
 
New Hampshire
Winter Storm Warning
Portions of central, northern and southern New Hampshire are under a winter storm warning from 7am on Saturday until 6am on Sunday.  Near blizzard conditions are expected.  Snowfall rates of one to two inches an hour will be possible.
  • 7-13 inches snow accumulations
  • Winds gusting as high as 35 mph
 
Maine
Winter Storm Warning / Blizzard Warning
A winter storm warning is in place for central, southwest and western Maine starting 7am on Saturday and ending 6am on Sunday.  Heavy snow expected.  A blizzard warning is in effect for portions of Coastal DownEast, Interior Down East and Penobscot Valley, ME starting 7am on Saturday until 7am on Sunday.  
  • Winter storm warning:  7-13 inches snow accumulation; Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.  Near blizzard conditions are expected with snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour possible.
  • Blizzard Warning:  11-18 inches snow accumulation; Winds gusting as high as 55 mph.
