U.S. Weather Update 1.26.23

Summary:
A strong system will bring heavy snow to the Northeast and heavy lake effect snow downwind of the Great Lakes. High winds and heavy snow will develop across portions of the Northern Rockies and North and Central Plains ahead of a strong Arctic Front. Damaging Santa Ana winds continue in Southern California as high pressure strengthens over the Great Basin. Impacted Lanes: I-96, I-94, I-86, I-490, I-390, I-90, I-81, I-87, I-89, I-95, I-80, I-79, I-77


Maine
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST this evening

  • Heavy mixed precipitation. Additional snow accumulations between 1 and 7 inches for a storm total of 9 to 17 inches, sleet accumulations up to one tenth of an inch and ice accumulations around two tenths of an inch.
  • Impacts: Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 AM EST this morning

  • Southeast winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and powerlines. Numerous to widespread power outages are likely. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Flood Advisory remains in effect until 11 AM EST this morning

  • Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
  • Impacts: Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Water over roadways.

Vermont
Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 7 PM EST this evening

  • Snow expected. Periods of snow will continue through the day today, and may mix with freezing rain or sleet at times early this morning. Additional snow amounts of 2 to 5 inches are expected, along with a few hundredths of an inch of ice.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact this morning`s commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 PM EST this evening

  • Mixed precipitation expected. Periods of snow will continue through the day, mixed at times with sleet and freezing rain this morning. Additional snow accumulations will be 2 inches or less, along with a few hundredths of an inch of ice.
  • Impacts: Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact this morning`s commute.

California
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 10 PM PST this evening

  • Northeast winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Isolated remote gusts around 75 mph in the foothills.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 10 PM PST this evening

  • Northeast winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM PST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

New Mexico 
Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM MST this morning 

  • Visibility less than one mile at times in freezing fog.
  • Impacts: Low visibility could make driving conditions hazardous. Travel on I-40 in the Clines Corners area will be impacted.

Additional Flood Advisories include but are not limited to: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and  Connecticut 

Additional Winter Storm Warnings include but are not limited to: West Virginia, Maryland, New York, New Hampshire Wyoming and Colorado

Additional Winter Weather Advisories include but are not limited to: Oregon, Washington, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and New Hampshire

 Additional High Wind Warnings include but are not limited to: Montana and Wyoming

Additional Wind Advisories include but are not limited to: Washington, Oregon, North Dakota and South Dakota

Additional Dense Fog Advisories include but are not limited to: Utah

Additional Freezing Fog Advisories include but are not limited to: Nevada
