U.S. Weather Update 1.23.23

Summary:
A storm system will organize over the Southwestern U.S. on Monday, before becoming a large-scale winter storm system and ejecting into the southern Plains on Tuesday. This storm will impact portions of the Central, Southern and Eastern U.S. through midweek with a variety of hazards, including a swath of heavy snow and severe thunderstorms with heavy rainfall. Impacted Lanes: I-40, I-10, I-76, I-70, I-64, I-81, I-79, I-77, I-89, I-80, I-99, I-84, I-87, I-88, I-90, I-91, I-93, I-95


New Jersey
Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon

  • Up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.
  • Impacts: At this level, flooding begins on the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, and along inland tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible.

California
High Wind Warning remains in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon

  • Northeast winds 35 to 45 mph with gusts up to 75 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are possible. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect until 3 PM PST this afternoon

  • Minor coastal flooding expected at prone low lying coastal locations along the coast and the San Francisco Bay shoreline during peak high tide.
  • Impacts: Flooding of lots, parks, and roads with only isolated road closures expected.

Wind Advisory remains in effect until 4 PM PST this afternoon

  • North winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph expected.
  • Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. Travel may be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. 

New York
Winter Strom Warning remains in effect until 1 PM EST this afternoon

  • Heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, with storm totals of 6 to 10 inches. Locally higher amounts possible.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute.

Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 PM EST this afternoon

  • A mix of rain and snow, changing to all snow this afternoon. Additional wet snow accumulation 2 to 4 inches, with storm totals of 3 to 7 inches.
  • Impacts: Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the morning commute, and may linger into the evening commute.

Iowa 
Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 AM CST this morning

  • Visibility one quarter mile or less in dense fog.
  • Impacts: Hazardous driving conditions due to low visibility.

Additional Wind Advisories include but are not limited to: Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Texas and South Carolina

Additional Coastal Flood Advisories include but are not limited to: Delaware, Connecticut and Massachusetts
